Tetra promoting small tank for "Dory".

Working in the pet industry, I've actually found the fish product manufacturers overall are aware that hippo tangs are not appropriate for most people. There have been several attempts at providing educational materials for pet stores regarding the needs of hippo tangs.

This kit is Dory themed, in that it has Dory decor. And while that might be misleading, it does say on the side which fish the tank is appropriate for. I think it's OK.

Cheers,

Ok to me too, just deco, even realistic population proposal.
You don't know how sponge bob, nemo, frozen character and co are popular decorations till you have work in a petstore.

This is no surprise. Hopefully, if someone does try to put a Dory fish in a tank that small, the store they buy it in will ask all the appropriate questions about their "set-up" and advise them to buy some goldfish or something. I do agree that it may just be a themed fresh water set up.

To start all packages can be misleading to consumers, pretty sure everyone remembers this beautiful JBJ package.

On an average day in the LFS I work at, no you can't put a Dory in a 20 gallon is probably something I say 5-8 times per 6 hour shift. We sell the decorations we even brought in some nice Bosemani rainbow fish like liveaquaria graciously suggested to sway customers into. Sadly they're awesome looking but cost 25 dollars so people stay away from them. But I'm sure the phrase 'OMG DORY' will exist for years to come without any help from companies trying make money. But really the only way to keep people from buying the fish is informing them. So be kind to your LFS employees, they probably have already had to say no to a bunch of people and already feel like the villain of fish tanks to children everywhere and saviors to their parents wallets.

This doesn't seem to be a big deal. I see that online retailers are including the following;

Finding Dory Starter Aquarium - 18 Litres

Easy to set up and start for children to take their first step in fish keeping.

This aquarium is designed to keep either a small goldfish or with the addition of a small aquarium heater to keep a few small tropical fish.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

These aquariums are NOT designed for keeping saltwater fish like Regal Tangs (Dory).

Please understand that Regal Tangs are saltwater fish and require much larger, marine specific aquariums with salt water and the correct environment.

Tetra "Finding Dory" themed starter aquarium contains:

  • starter treatments - Tetra Aquasafe water conditioner
  • fish food - TetraMin Food
  • Tetra Easy Crystal Filter providing modern, clean and efficient filtration - supplied with two filter cartrdiges
  • starter brochure that helps you to take the first steps
  • gravel
  • stickers to help decorate your aquarium
  • EasyCrystal Filter and one EasyCrystal Filter cartridge replacements available here

Hopefully we can still rely on the relative high price and the care of a fish store workers to dissuade people from buying them. The captive bred tangs came just in time

It's not saying to put Dory in there... but the power of suggestion. We worked so hard to separate the two. A manufacturer such as Tetra needs to promote good things, not be a little sneaky and misleading. Nothing makes it a freshwater tank besides the food. It's perfectly viable for a saltwater setup.
So if the "advertising picture" was a hammerhead shark,, would you react the same way?

Personally I look at it like this.. A 4 yr old sees Dory and gets a goldfish,, like it says on side of box.(no where mentioning saltwater, and no applicable supplies for it either) . NOW we have a possible future reefer!
