Hi there! I’m a newbie to your community. I’ve been visiting the reef2reef website for help for some time and realized I don’t have an account- now I do!

I’m sorry if I post something that has already been asked... I’m still trying to navigate site and figure out threads.

About me- My family and I just moved to Miami and couldn’t be happier. We are one mile from Biscayne Bay and the weather and people are incredible. I have a 30 gallon tank with a skilter filter and 2 powerheada that’s been set up since August. I have live sand, several large pieces of live rock and 2 clowns, 2 cromos, 1 royal gamma and a feisty cleaner shrimp. Everything is running well and we have only had a few losses. We have a wonderful fish place up the street (love the guys at Reef Top) and I’m obsessed with my tank. Much to my families amusement I purchased an ottoman and a magnifying glass and sit and observe the tank for hours. ☺️ I grew up on Big Pine Key and spent my childhood with my head under water so this brings back awesome memories.

Questions for the community- how many fish do you recommend for a 30 gallon?

How often do you vacuum your sand/gravel?

What are my clownfish doing??? The male has been in the same spot all day hovering over a spot on a rock and the female comes over and beats him up. My daughter called the fish store and was told they were doing “a live dance”. Is it true? Am I going to be a mom again????

What are the tiny white spiral clusters that are appearing in spots all over live rock? I’ve also noticed a bunch of small snails... are they snail eggies?

I love to hear what you all have to say and sincerely appreciate any advice. Sorry this first post so long! Thanks for having me!

And from what I've always heard and go buy is 1 fish per 10 gallons. This is not always the case as you can increase filtration to accommodate. The real issue becomes territory and room for each fish to feel comfortable. I stick by it altho I have 6 in my 55 gallon. Altho 4 of those fish are mated pairs of clowns and hawkfish
So they share territory and usually stick very close to each other.

Glad you joined our crew! Best of luck to you with your aquarium! Welcome from the center of the State! As for the number of fish for a 30 gallon tank...it’s depends on the size of the fish, however, I wouldn’t go with more than 4-5, the size of a Clownfish. The white spirals are Spirorbid Worms and are completely harmless and good for reef tanks. They are filter feeders that catch small plankton and particles of food. Are your Clowns a true pair? Are they the same size? All Clownfish are Males, then the dominant one turns into a Female and gets much larger than the male.

I think its hard to answer this but could get away with some smaller fish a few snails and a cleaner along with coral. I'm sure someone else can answer this better I have a 125 gal tank so what I say is going to be much different for your tank.

I vacuum my sand every week when I do my water change

do you have any pictures of the white spiral clusters? If its what I think then its a good thing, but would like to see a picture to confirm.

Thank you for the info on the worms. I spent a lot of time diving down internet holes and couldn’t find out exactly what they were.

About the clowns... one is definitely larger so I’m assuming she’s the female. She has had the small male against this rock all day and he looks exhausted. I’m a wreck. . I’ve looked for eggs (see none) and looked to see if a white tube is protruding from either (none). How long can this go on?

Wow look at all these replies! You guys rock! Here are the white things I’m seeing. I swear whenever I look into tank they have multiplied... I hope this picture works. I look at them through my magnifying glass (much to my families amusement) and they look a lot bigger...

Welcome to R2R! Those are Spirorbid Worms as noted. Tank is pretty new, so they may increase if there is no space competition. Cute clowns, even if the female is being a rough mate. That happens sometimes. She wants to see the male submit. Should be fine, but sometimes a pair just does not work out.
