Good, I need to see clear cut results once in awhile, no matter what it is. :)

I ordered my pharmaceuticals today.
 
For a measly 3.5k you can get Famous Brand Virtual Reality Set and with additional subscription to Aquarium channel, you can have virtual Reef Tank in your own ( or rental) house. No need for water changes, copper, antybioitics and no disasters like water leak ( unless you get corrupted software)

@taricha, I debated about starting a new thread on trying this idea but decided the experiment would go nicely right here. My treatment design for this pilot study follows the Mr. Creosote approach of “all mixed up in a bucket”. I will expose an infant model aquarium to all the pharmaceuticals at once. The test platform looks like this, 3 x3x 3 inch plastic cubes with a working volume of 0.2 L.

The cubes are aerated with humidified air, rocked gently (infants after all) on an orbital shaker, and illuminated with 300 par light. Each little aquarium has 20 g of clean aragonite sand with an established nitrifying bacteria population (Bio Spira). Each aquarium was inoculated with 0.2 L of aquarium water for 24 hours before replacing it with growth media (Instant Ocean, 5 ppm NO3, 0.5 ppm PO4). This inoculation procedure introduces a ton of species. Boxes 1 and 2 are replicate controls with only growth media. The replicate treatment in Boxes 3 and 4 contain the manufacturer‘s recommended dose of these pharmaceuticals in the growth media

Once a week, there will be a 100% media change, i.e., new control and treatment media, and the grow out period is planned to be 60 days. The aquaria will receive a daily feeding of fish flakes with a 1 ppm NO3 equivalent of protein nitrogen. Unless something interesting happens, I’ll report on the experiment every two weeks.

Side benefit to this experiment is that if you get a cut, you can just dip it in the tank to sterilize it. lol

Just for kicks, I'll predict 8 weeks of clean colorless sand. :)
 
I followed your advice and now my White Koi Tang looks sick, what should I do?!? Is there a drip that I can do to revive?
Please continue following the advice of absolutely not doing any of the stuff you read in this thread, and I'm certain the very expensive fish will color back up to his previous paleness :)

(Personally, I like to ozone my white fish to keep them nice and white.)

In your experience would bleach or Oxy-Clean help to whiten the whites?

Week 2 Update

Almost two weeks into the experiment and the control is growing algae and the pharmaceutically treated aquarium (@taricha ”No Ug” formulation) is showing the slightest green blush. Nice obvious distinction. The control is running nutrient depleted, no PO4 or any inorganic-N detected 7 days after the weekly media change and daily feeding of fish flakes. The treated aquarium is accumulating tenths of ppm nitrite but no PO4. Heterotrophic bacteria activity is substantially higher in the control than the treatment. I have no idea whether this is a bactericide effect of the pharmaceuticals or from the presumably reduced DOC in the media from the lack of algae growth. Back in two weeks

When you get enough green to sample, I'd love to meet those hardy slight green blush nuisances under a microscope.

Yep, it’s on the schedule to ID what’s breaking through. I also added microscope slides to each aquarium to see what’s growing.
