The Hawkfish Lover Thread!

I love both of mine. Shame the Long Nose got a taste for shrimp the past year. After loosing two cleaner shrimp and a fire shrimp, I finally figured out the culprit. The Falco has only been in the tank since late Sept. The Long nose is about 4 years old and has survived two carpet surfing trips!

I'm kind of a fan. I've had a couple Flames and they were hands my favorite. Tons of personality, friendly and just overall uniquely weird but special. Bob my last one lasted 6 years.

I considered a Flame, as I love that color and pop it can bring. I ran across the Falco for 20 bucks at my LFS and couldn't say no. I'm hoping to attempt a pair @ somepoint. The Falco is interesting to watch at lights out, he becomes VERY active and hunts for whatever he can kill.

Will a flame hawk go after shrimp that are already established in a tank prior to the hawks addition?

Depends. My Falco didn't care, but my longtime long nose suddenly decided that shrimp are food after I started my 120 in March. He spent 3 years with a fire shrimp, cleaner shrimp and a peppermint shrimp between a 30 & 50 gal and didn't care. New tank and the long nose went nuclear. Meaning Hawkfish = crapshoot.

gotcha. Thanks for weighing in. I almost wonder if the tank move did it. Maybe it was like a territory reset?

idk if I’ll try it or not. Waifu wants flame hawk, I want cleaner shrimp. We’ll see what happens when the 120 gets set up in the next few weeks lol

Start with a cheap shrimp and put in the hawk. See if he suddenly stalks the shrimp. I was almost done with the long nose after he killed my beautiful fire shrimp.

That guy is a beast! What a stud. My suggestion with shrimp + hawks is smaller the hawk the better in the beginning especially with shrimp in the tank. Then again there is absolutely no certainty they wont hunt. In 15 years of having hawks I've never had a shrimp go missing but maybe I just got lucky. My tanks were all 90g and smaller as well. My new Cade 1200 will have a mated pair of small flame hawks ( if I can find them) and at least one larger shrimp.

I have 1 cleaner, 3 peppermint, and 2 harleqzin shrimps in my 120 with no issues so far.

I've been on the fence of getting a shrimp. I've never seen my flame hawk kill or attack any hermits or anything but I've heard stories. Don't want to drop 40 bucks on a shrimp just for it to turn into an expensive treat lol.

Yup, and after it happened the first time, I was in total wonder of why did my shrimp 'suddenly' die. Then the second time was curiosity, and then I noticed the Long Nose hawk stalking the shrimp when it left the rock.

So got this little lady a week ago. Which means tomorrow she gets a name (1 week rule with my 6 yr old to avoid attachment. Doesn't work at all haha but it's a good ritual).

Bit of a rough week getting used to the tank and the Sailfin queen bee. Seems ok now. Pictured here sitting on Shelly the big hermit.

Getting her teeth brushed by a cleaner shrimp. Heart in mouth watching this...so far all shrimp and hermits accounted for.
