Alright guys be honest. I've done a lot of reading on finishes for the stand. After it's all said and done, I think I'm just going with latex paint. Obviously kilz primer and a crap ton of polyurethane too. Thoughts?

If you lay down a good coat of Kilz I think that would be fine.. I love that stuff!

I was planning on that, 5 coats of paint, and 3+ poly. No woodgrain visible.

Poly is a great product. It is the 24 hour dry time and tacky surface during that time that make a smooth finish a challenge.

If I were going to paint a stand, inside or out, I would use the Valspar cabinet paint. And plan on doing at least 5 coats.

If you want to hide the wood grain, put down the primer and let it dry really well. Take spackle (wall patch stuff) and put a very thin coat over it to fill in the wood grain. Let it dry for a day and sand it smooth. Then, paint over it and the grain will be gone.

I have learned from experience in the last 2 weeks that 5 coats of paint alone isn't enough to hide the wood grain. This has worked very well for my kitchen cabinets.

I use two coats of sanding sealer on bare wood sanded with 400 between coats. Then Zinser primer, sanded to either 320 or 400 then alkyd enamel paint.

I didn't do this for the first time ever on my cabinets and it look like hell.

@Katrina71 If you are wanting a purple tang, I am about to take in one with hlle and make it better. It will not be going through qt, until the hlle is healed up, unless I can get time at home to do TTM plus peroxide qt. It will be needing a home though when all healed.

Far be it from me to ever speak for someone else. However, in this case, I don't think @dantimdad will mind.
Just to be clear, when he says "Zinsser" primer, I hope he is referring to their Shellac Based Primer. Zinsser makes a number of primers and the B-I-N Shellac Based Primer is the one you want to use. Be warned, though, that since it is shellac based, it has high VOCs, an odor to match and needs to be cleaned with denatured alcohol. I've sprayed more trim and molding than I care to mention with this and has been my "go to" for many years.
