In addition to the supply chain disruptions, I have noticed many new employees at our local market and they are all pushing around and filling up these pick-up customer carts. The Covid-19 has a lot of people using this service now. Guess what? Looks like we are all paying for the convenience of a few. They have to pay all of these additional salaries somehow. They have also closed another cluster of regular check out lanes and now have two sizeable self-checkout areas and fewer checkers. Sorry for the rant, but just yesterday morning I rolled up with a basket full of groceries and there were NO checkers - only self-checkout. The codger came out in my and I complained. Who wants to run $300 worth of groceries through one of those dinky self-checkouts where you have to scan the item and keep it on the small shelf until you pay. It won't f'in fit! I'm sorry. I was not cut out to be a grocery shopper. :)
I am no economist, but can the increased cost be due to the 4 to 8 trillion dollars they printed? Seems like they just made all the money we have dutifully saved worth less.

the trillions would affect the dollar against other currencies and this affect prices of foreign goods priced in dollars like oil. China though has a fixed currency exchange and not a market based so if they decide not to change the rate, then the goods we buy from then won't change.

It's a supply shortage because of the social distancing in the work place (less employees can be in the facility and thus less product can be processed) and shut downs due to employees getting the virus.

@12gallonsofhex , further to my post:

Inflation used to be caused by demand outpacing supply in a hot economy. Building factories is very expensive and requires a long term commitment so companies preferred to raise prices and increase their profit margins first. While that theoretically is true, in the global markets and with fast changing supply chains, that no longer happens. New supply can be found very quickly. Today's version of inflation is driven by federal fiscal policies - primarily the national debt. The value of the dollar is determined by the supply and demand of the dollar on the FOREX markets. By spending more than we collect, we then borrow by issuing treasuries to pay for our bills just like using credit cards to make ends meet. The additional spending via borrowing more increases the supply of the dollar. If demand for the dollar doesn't change then the value of he dollar must drop. That means it takes more dollars to buy the same barrel of oil.

Now, that would be gas prices should rocket up. But, keep in mind, cars, buses , planes aren't running and lights and machinery aren't using electric (oil fueled electric plants) so the the world demand for oil is dropping offsetting to some extend the increase in dollars.

And since this isn't just the US, other currencies haven't gained on the dollar as their countries have had the same impact on fiscal policies so other than some blips the dollar has held against other currencies .
