My vote is split between too many gadgets and acros. I say this as someone with more gadgets on a 14G nano than you'll ever see, but my reasoning is to help maintain stability and make up for the time that I'm unable to spend on the tank during my hectic work schedule. One thing I will say is that every gadget I have has a big role in my system and is a near necessity for my particular case, but I also think a lot of folks just try to out-gadget each other just for the sake of being cool.
On the acros side, there's this stigma that the only great tanks are full SPS-only systems and until you get acros, you aren't winning. The problem with this is you see folks with 3 months of total experience spend boat loads of money on designer acros and fancy equipment that simply don't have the experience to keep them yet. The number of posts you see on here weekly of people that talk about their acros dying and simply listing their equipment without parameters is nuts. IMO, the bottom line is if you don't have a mature tank, a decent amount of experience, and solid stability, acros will never thrive in your system.
