One thing thats diving me a little crazy right now is seeing the algea growth on the pale white substrate it makes me believe that my lights are bad, So I have to keep reminding myself its only the beginning. Patience is a virtue in this hobby amen.:angel:

My protein skimmer is a beast,for the tank size. I started out with one air line hooked up. About until about a week ago I had a good rate of skim, actually a really good rate very thick foam. So I've monitored it, and today have decided to add the second airline to the protein skimmer pump. Well long long and behold this was the answer to my problem and now I'm back to skimming thick frothy foam!!!! The reason I'm so happy about this is because I believe that the thick foam replicates the skimming action of the ocean rather than a watery skim . When I have everything dialed in the way I like I check the surface of the water for particle spiraling in one place in a circular motion. I adjust the power heads to direct the flow distributed between providing the corals with plenty of flow and also making sure the waters surface is feeding the overflow properly with the skim water. Through my observation this is very affective in producing a effective skim. Have you expierienced the same?

Tonight I was nervous too, but decided to pick at some zoas with a serious bubble algae problem. So I took a cupful of tank water in a large mouth cup, with plenty of light and a pick, I picked the bubble algae off the Zoa's frag plug, and then turkey basted the plug after removing the bubble algae to remove remaining bubble algae particles. Net result, one polyp came loose during the process so I stuck it on a frag plug, and as far as the rest I'm very happy the bubble algae is gone!!! Woot woot!!!!

Tonight for the first time I dosed baking soda to bring my alkalinity back up to a safer range. My Alkalinity before dosing was 7.329 . To bring my tanks Alkalinity back to a safer level, I used a reef calculator, I entered my tank size, entered the product being used, entered the desired Alkalinity, pressed calculate and vwoala!!!!! I mixed five teaspoons of baking soda in RO/DI water, half enough to top off the sump because I also dosed calcium. It's So easy, thank god for the reef calculator!!!!!
