The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

I have a Meleagris leopard, is this one that will transition without being pushed? When you say you introduce new fish, do you mean any fish, or specifically another species of leopard wrasse?
Meleagris have about 50 percent chance of transitioning. A lot can make or break it.
If you add a fairy or flasher to a female fairy or flasher that is equal competition for a spot on the pecking order then it will most of the time transition quick.
Can be done with sand sleepers but more hit and miss. Any fish can have same effect on some wrasse and mix of wrasse can have same effect but harder to size them up. Smaller unnatural Qt tanks seem to make some start to transition but can’t say for sure. A lot of mine and others in qt setting I see wrasse transition. Stress and mix of wrasse in small area maybe idk.
Fish will eat more when pecking order is being pushed to grow big and strong. That is when they transition.

Probably from my patented (and likely unhealthy long term) “FishRoids” diet haha.

TDO pellets for lunch, ROE eggs late afternoon, some mysis for a snack before lights ramp down. Everyone started packing on mass.
I use all three. I love eggs. They spread everywhere and don’t seem to foul the tank.

Those ROE really help them fatten up! That and TDO have become the staple of my feeding schedule.

It just so happens that I got a nice shipment from Eric over at tank stop in time for wrasse Wednesday.

Carpenter Flasher, Blue Flasher and a pintail wrasse in the acclimation box with a pair of flameback angels.
Oh wow that blue looks pretty spicy. Got anymore pictures!

I sware I will get my dlsr out and learn to use it on my tank one day i sware.

Some new peeps. These actually came as a replacement for a DOA so I was surprised they sent two. Both swimming fine in the bucket while acclimating and now they’re in the box. Hopefully there’s no aggression so I can take them out later in the day

Keep them well fed and healthy, they will transform with out any problem. I have a harem of them and always one will transform and keep the rest in line and not transformed.
You can use the large mirror technique to push them along. I have a thread here that document all the stage of M. meleagris transforming from small juvenile to full terminal male with nuptial coloration. I will link the thread below. I am actually proud of my documentation in this particular case.

I’ve never had a tile fish, but some of these really pretty ones that have popped up in recent years have made me consider it.

I have a bare bottom tank though, and not sure how they’d do without sand.
I don’t know that they need sand @i cant think ??

@Slocke @i cant think how long should I keep the exquisite in qt. He’s eating pellets and frozen, swimming. Overall he looks really good.

When I do move him to the display I have an acclimation box. I’m concerned he will have no where to feel comfortable in the box. Should I cut some pvc pipe and put it in there with him?

My take on an acclimation box is for new fish to be seen and be safe without older fish being able to cause harm. I don’t like using pvc pipes and other hiding places as they will strictly hide and avoid being seen. Then when introduced to gen pop will be seen for first time. Just my .02

What are you treating with or is this just for observation?
@Crabby48 is the best with wrasse qt

I would put something simple just for it to sleep in.

Strictly observation. I wanted to make sure he was eating and no issues with him before hitting Dt. The qt has never had any kind of medication in it. The simplest thing I can think of is pvc but I am open to suggestions. I just don’t want to intro him to the tank and my tang thinks he needs to show him who rules the tank.

Yeah a simple piece of PVC will do fine

Do you have a few pieces of rubble? I like having a couple of pieces that the fish can use for comfort but won't fully hide them from everyone else in the tank.

Maybe not quite as many pieces.

I’m proud to finally post on the LOVERS thread.

@i cant think @Slocke @tbrown - Shout-out to the wrasse experts who are helping me refine my wrasse stocking list!

My arrival on Valentines’ Day, A lovely lil Mel Wrasse. He is eating well, P.E. Mysis, Rod’s OG, thus far. Picking at rockscape, nibbling on copepods, and chose a lovely baby snail for a snack - teenagers! What’s a mom to do.

And while @i cant think would have preferred me get a different wrasse; like Mr Brown, I was smitten a long time ago while dreaming of my future tank and he had to be a part of the family. Of course I will be taking his recommendation on an Idiris and a couple other of his personal favs over the next 4 months.

BTW, He came with a Diamond Goby buddy who he loves. (You can read my post on them separately, if interested)

thank you! I guess he better start posing, cause he is the only wrasse I can feature -LOL

I hope I’m wrong, but does this look like a spinal injury? The second exquisite is hiding somewhere at the moment so hopefully he looks better in the morning

Edit: Alright looks like the video isn’t going through, but it’s swimming like this and is struggling a bit.
