The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

I’m a sucker for the expressive little eyes on these fish. Rhomboid knows if it protests the food I give and stares at me long enough, I’ll eventually bring the R.O.E. for extra lunch.

Seeing it transition from a tiny female to this was definitely my favorite fish keeping experience ever.

Stopped by a not so local fish shop on my way home from University of Michigan Children's hospital with my little one today (nothing major, just got a new hip brace). Found a wrasse that had to come home, hoping it gets along with the red breasted (Cheilinus fasciatus) when it's done in quarantine. Cheilinus chlorosus, the Floral Wrasse! Also picked up a couple lobsters for a different tank, some of my favorite reef critters lol.

Those are in the for sale tank? Must be fun to catch them. Get the vivien. Mine came in the upper 50s lower 60s and survived fine. Just a nice sand nap needed.

Nah. You have to pay extra for one of their DT fish but not much more. I’d love the Vivienne but I’ve got an unknown assassin in my tank and I think only tough fish will work. My guess is the Timor or the cleaner wrasse.

Well I know what wrasse this is Its fattened up massively and had a growth spurt since the move!

Splendid pencil wrasse sighting today! Hanging in the back and even made eye contact a few times without trying to jump. He's back in the sand now. Looking thinner. At least I had him good and fat before he went nuts in the observation tank.

Man, i really wish Coris species other than gaimard and aygula were available in Australia. Especially when we have some stunning natives like Coris picta

The Vivian’s looks to be a female kuiteri by the way

Vivian’s has half a red body but Kuiter’s has an overall pink body.

That was my first thought too. Too much of a checkerboard look.

This wrasse Wednesday is sad, but a happy ending. I lost my old man Dusky he was about 6 yo and about 6-7”. So I replaced him with these three little guys…

Are Anapses lennardi cleaners? I witnessed some interesting behaviour yesterday between my 18-20cm ribbon sweetlip and my 7cm ish lennardi. The sweetlip swam up to the lennardi, which was busy picking at my liverock and hovered next to it with it's mouth gaping (the sweetlip can narrowly fit the lennardi in it's mouth) and for a few seconds the lennardi seemed like it was going to swim inside like a cleaner wrasse would.
Even if they're not cleaners, the sweetlip certainly thought it was. Maybe that could explain their bright colouration?

I wouldn’t be surprised. A few genera of wrasse clean other fish. Hogfish(Bodianus) does it too for example
