The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Just picked up a really nice pair of Hawaiian Flame Wrasses from Vivid here in LA. Thought I would share a vid with you guys.

Beautiful flames! Is that a pink streaked wrasse hiding by the skunk cleaner shrimp?

Good eye! It is indeed a pink-streaked I picked up off the DD a couple weeks ago. I've owned a few over the years and I think they are one of my favorite fish (unlike their rude cousins the 6-lines). Ask anyone who owns one and I guarantee you they will say they love it ha.

Very cool. I always wanted one, but they're never available in my area. They are some sneaky little guys.

Ok so this is labeled as a African KwaZulu Fairy Wrasse Female. It looks identical to what a couple other vendors are selling as female diamondtail flashers. What am I missing?

I think you're right, they are both pics of Cirrhilabrus sp 2/sp 3, kwazulu/kenyan fairy wrasse.

I'm 80% wrasse. Lol. Here's s little collage I put together of all my fish I cut out over black background. I'm pretty happy with this stock if it will stay this way.

Very cool graphic!

Alright, I've been MIA for a bit. Too many irons in the fire for 24 hour days!
Thanks.
This may be a silly question but I've read leopards get easily stressed and die in quarantine tanks or just being moved a bit. Should the new potter's leopard be put into the social acclimation box or no? I understand they like sand, but will have to seal up some holes if I put him in the SA box with sand. Just trying to figure out the best way to do this while keeping the survival rate from going down on him.
I always advocate using acclimation boxes, but I agree about using them without sand.

Granted I have limited experience but I don't think QT is as stressful as throwing one in a tank with a bunch of established competitors for food and space.
Agree!

I agree with not putting sand in the acclimation box, as this will help the potters get used to the lighting schedule.
And that being the reason I don't use sand either in them. Plus if the bury out of site, it really defeats the whole point of what you're trying to achieve.

What do people know about Stethojulis bandanensis? There does not seem to be a lot of hobby information on them.
A very active, voracious planktivore. It is one of the most difficult fish to keep in the hobby. I am unaware of a single success story.
Why is it so hard to keep? With a big enough tank and enough live rock the diet should not be an issue. Are they hard to get to eat at all in captivity?
It has more to do with their needed caloric intake. They are more equipped at eating from the water column rather than effectively picking pods off of the rock. They need to feed quite frequently. Even in tanks of a couple hundred gallons they fail to thrive. Perhaps in tanks 500+g, but I have yet to see a success story.
Yup; totally agree. Avoid the species completely. They simply cannot be provided with enough food in captivity.

Lol thanks. They went in the tank and all was good until this morning found one dead. The other is missing. Keeping my fingers crossed
It's possible your established male won't accept them.

My new M. geoffroyi in social acclimation. Ordered as a "small" but came in about 4".

Beautiful male!

Little feeding video. The Potter's was not interested in the LRS, gonna give some live food a shot tomorrow (any recommendations?) He was pacing along the glass all day yesterday, but has let up a little today.
Live blackworms, if you can find them in your area.

You've missed nothing; those are all female Kwazulu.

Check out a couple new additions

Earmuff wrasse (halichoeres melasmapomus) and Grey head wrasse (halichoeres leucurus)
Congrats on finally finding another earmuff! I know you've been after one for a long while.

My Earmuff jumped out of QT during a water change...must've been out of the room at the time. Found him 2 days later. :(

If you find another, let me know please!

Caught my C. rubripinnis for persistent bulling towards my little C. lubbocki as well as to trade in towards a very nice C. rubrimarginatus. It cost a little more, but a very nice trade in my book. I've always liked the pink and the blue margin wrasses but they are not common in my area at all. He is in socail quarantine now. Even happier with my stock list now.

It's very possible, never saw the male flash until these females but lost both of them unfortunately. The weird thing is they were eating in the bucket during acclimation, looked perfectly fine. One thing that took place that I never experienced before was that they never went in the sand to sleep and I think it has to do with were they came from. Wonder what is your thoughts

Was told it was a male. Looks like it could possibly be a female. Anyone know?
