I recently went camping for 5 days. Left this note for my sister in law.
--Please pour both bags labeled sat here (arrow pointing to refugium). Fill water in bottom tank to the line. Feed cup marked sat to main tank. Cups in fridge, second shelf on right. Thankyou
Bags are in stand and water is in bucket on floor. --

Came back to find no water added for top off, no food fed, and no cal or alk added!!!!
Turns out she took a 1/4 lb of blackworms in 3 day old water fro.m the left side of the top shelf and dumped it in the fuge! Omg, I can't believe the tank looks filthy but fine otherwise. Testing, corrections, and apologies to my babies today :-(

I never leave just notes. I walk them through it. This bucket here...goes here...to this level. Feed this much here...make sure this guy eats.

Should of seen my wife first time she had to break frozen silversides in half to thaw!

I'm so thankful that my neighbor had a reef tank for about 7 years before getting out of the hobby... Hopefully he won't mind to drop by a few times when I go out of town this fall. You should still consider yourself lucky... I've known people who have had power outages or heater explosions while they were out of town and they've lost it all.

I thought the note was pretty exact. What i didnt count on was her lack of caring. Should have known it didnt matter to her. But she could have atleast read the note. Lol

I am thrilled everything is alive. I have more invested than most. But geeeez

One thing I started doing was I make a quick iphone video of where the stuff is and how to do what I want them to do and send it to them so they can reference back. But if they don't care then it doesn't matter anyway!

Although I am not sure it would have mattered, that is a great idea.

I went on vacation twice a year for 23 days each time. I had the same house sitter for like 10 years. Every single time something different would "happen" in my absence. One time instead of feeding ghost shrimp, she poured in phyto. WT...!!!

I guess one could also argue that not automating those simple tasks and leaving the tank for 5 days could also elicit this same response,
"they just don't get it".

I am a very hands on kind of guy. I dont trust equipment to do my job. Dosers, ato, auto feeders, controllers etc.... never make my equipment list. Short of a light timer. But i see your perspective. I believe a human making decisions is much better. Only chose the wrong human. Lol

I think I just need to find someone who can read. LOL Or that cares even the slightest bit about something that is so important to me.

Clearly you need to find someone better than her FOR SURE!!

It it was me and she did that, I would kick her until she was dead !!

There is just NO excuse for that kind of STUPID!!
