I wonder about this part...I am hesitant to join them together. Since I run moonshiners on the reef joining them together would increase the water volume and in that the cost of the supplements. With this being a fowlr I'm not sure that would make sense. Dosing more just due to the volume not more corals.
Science says that you're right but my analytical mind that refuses to shut up and listen doesn't agree.
If your tank is uptaking minerals and such because of the corals, wouldn't it stand to reason that, increasing the water volume but not increasing the coral draw would keep the dose the same?
Basically, 5 pounds of coral in 200 gallons of water needs the same amount of iodine as 5 pounds of water in 40 gallons of water? Therefore, with the exception of the initial dose to get the new water volume to be the same values as the old tank, the usage each day won't necessarily increase.
However, with that said, the FOWLR tanks do tend to be dirtier so your bioload on the sump would be greater and you'd potentially have to run additional filtration.
