I bought a used Apex Jr when I first started - it is a fantastic controller and I still use it today. I would not be too concerned with the limited scaleability - you can still do quite a lot with them! I had 2 EB8, a PM1 and IO module on mine. To me, it's everything you need and nothing you don't. Unless you get really advanced, it's going to handle anything you want to do. Don't get too drawn into the "fanciness" of the new versions. Neptune really nailed it from the very start and all the new stuff is just gravy.
