I found a way to make an emergency filter or heater from home materials. If they fail and you cant go to the fish store at the second, This is the tread for you!

what will you need:

water siphon.

filter media (any type)

small container



the 1st one I will do it the backup filter.

Backup filter:

grab your siphon, add filter media in the outtake of the siphon, make sure the filter media is at the outtake like this:

2. grab small container, add filter media to container like this. Try and make it so the water travels through the container, here's an example, you can use any filter media:

next, place the intake of the siphon at the bottom or the aquarium, make sure the intake is at the bottom of the tank, you may need to weigh down the intake. Put your small container at the surface of the tank so that when the water exits the siphon, it goes into the container and overflows and re-enters your tank like this, the image below is just above the tank so the water can overflow back into the tank:

above is what it should look like when its finished. It may take a while for the water to compress and for the siphon flow to start. Good luck! If this doesn't work for you or you want to correct it please tell me.

Heater:

What you will need:

A container

A kettle

1. Add hot water to a kettle, add the hot water to the bottle, place the bottle in the tank and monitor temperature to make sure the hot bottle doesn't over heat the tank.

siphon shouldn't work above the water level in the tank. in a power outage heat is usually less of a concern imo, heater in the house usually works so tank still stays above room temperature. Try using that bottle trick overnight to heat a 200 gallon tank, jk

I find it much easier to just spend a $100 on a power inverter (at harbor freight) that can hook to your cars battery. Then run long outdoor extension cords to your tank and then you can power anything you want, heaters, pumps, lights...

Your car holds a lot of gas and can run idling until power to your house returns (even if it's days on end). You just need to monitor the Engine TEMP every hour to make sure it doesn't overheat. Lifting the hood for the Engine to breath is best.

I just think of this setup as a large scale gas power generator system using my car

As dedragon noted, I don't see how a siphon will run at all above the tank level, and if the filter is gravity draining into the tank, the siphon exit must be above tank level.

I feel like I've just watched a series of "life hacks" from Five Minute Crafts or some other YouTube content farmer. Except read it in word form. Awesome!

Maybe I've just become wired to expect short, snappy videos with dubious content instead of reading it in a thread. I feel like the original idea could really be elevated with a few more winky emojis. Nonetheless, I feel a sudden urge to cut the power off and have my partner and kids stand at the aquariums for a few hours, siphoning water into filter pads and boiling kettles of water for the "heat packs".

That was my life in Yellowknife when I lived there. One time, the power went out at Court because a raven (or ravens) pecked at some wires and fried a local transformer. They also tease people by perching in hidden spots and being eerily accurate mimics for running water, squeaking wheels, and clocks.

Everyone's afraid they will damage their car running it idle bc they overheard smthg someone may have said.

Bonk. Cars can idle indefinitely if the conditions to keep the Engine TEMP are under control and monitored.

At idle, coolant doesn't flow as readily (bc of a slow turning water pump)... BUT if you just watch the temp gauge, NO DAMAGE happens to your car if temp is within range.

Not a bad idea that if you run your car at idle to power an inverter for a long period of time...to go out once an hour and Tach RPMs to 3000 fir a couple of minutes to get the cars water pump to move more coolant.
