I'm happy to give a tour of the tank to someone coming over for frags or used equipment. I enjoy talking reef stuff with anyone who has a reason to be there. But I'm not likely to ask a stranger over just to look at the tank anymore than I would my guitars.

I don't know anyone locally that is into reefing. However I am a divorced dad to two active teenage girls that are with me 85% of the time so it's a constant revolving door of friends and teammates.

If my girls are bringing in a new person they tell them they can look but don't touch and unless they want to be bored out of their minds for the next hour or two with information do not ask me any questions. LOL

I have a small chocolate chip starfish that is in its own system that I will let them touch if it's near the surface provided they wash their hands. If my daughters don't drag their friends off I will also let them spot feed the starfish.

But if one of my girl's friends parents or someone came over yeah I would definitely show the tank off

I recently had a guest , not known to me. He posted on FB wanting to borrow a fish trap . I invited him so he could borrow. But honestly im wary of hyper kids who cant be controlled

I also scored ridiculously high on the"introvert" section of the M-B, and I deal with sick, stressed people all day every day. I don't dislike people but by the time the day is over I am "peopled out" and happy for some peace and quiet. I'm not particularly private about allowing people into my house but have to be feeling up to it. Usually I'm not up for it.

I do try to host a club meeting once a year, although we didn't sign up for one this year. And I usually make it to meetings when I'm not working. I was sorry to miss this one!

Heck, ive had the UPS man , a plumber, furniture delivery person and others ask to take pics. I have no problem with that.
I just hosted a group get-together in February and Nice turnout and sharing tanks with members. Many showed up to my delight

My tank is limited to family only. Clyde will try and chew a hole in anyone who isn’t family!!!

My tank is in my office in the front of the house with 3 large windows. We sit aways back on the property, but at night you can see the glow coming from that room. Our old house you could easily tell it was a tank and see it pretty well, now I wonder what people think.

I’m always happy to show my tank and critters to anyone interested. It is a thing of beauty and a thing of beauty is a thing of joy to be shared as much as possible. The world needs more beauty, joy and sharing.

Some people LOVE to entertain and have people over to their home at all times! Some people love to show off their reef tanks to others in the hobby. On the other hand there are those who are more private for various reasons. What about you?

When it comes to showing off your reef tank, to other reefers, at your house how private are you and why?

I remember something call the tour of tanks a reef club was doing. They would get a group together and go to a few houses to look at tanks.

It has been cool to read these. Lots of people with different feelings on this. My main hobby is model railroading (I am still working on putting up my 40B for this hobby). We have a similar problem.. a big immovable thing in your home people want to see. Usually the trains are not in the main living area which helps. We have three main groups of visitors:
  1. The local guys, first name basis with family. No problems with them visiting. My group rotates houses once a week.
  2. Other hobbyists who come over for operations or as part of convention tours. Generally a good crowd who respect the layout. You still get some people who don't play nice, they don't get invited back.
  3. General public as part of open houses. Some people have experienced damage or theft and give up on it but having some helpers on hand can mitigate that.
The main open house event in our area is "Tour de Chooch" where visitors travel from house to house to look at the layouts. It would be cool to do something similar with reef tanks. Its not as big a deal when its once a year and you plan for it (maybe having some helpers) rather than random drop-ins. I would love the chance to visit local reefers, see their tanks, ask questions, and perhaps connect with some. Thats how I found my model train group. "Tour de Reef".

My wife is a rather private person so the only people who will be invited will be reefing friends.

I have a few and it would be acceptable to my wife to have 1 or 2 over, but I doubt she'd ever agree to hosting a Reef Club Meeting or participate in a tour where people even I dont know might show up at my door.

So my tank is in the morning room with a ton of windows where the neighbors all see the blue glowing light every evening.

Every Halloween I get asked from about 2-3 ppl how much marijuana an I growing in the house. Lol

I tell them what I'm growing is 100times more expensive than any pot plant

.

I only have one local friend who has a salt tank . His looks as bad as mine does ! LOL
I don't carer if other non keeper friends stop by if the are interested, I'll answer their questions & tell them what's going in the tank .

I chose "family only" because there wasn't one below it ;Wideyed lol. I'm an introvert at heart and for my husband and I our house is our sanctuary, our zen place. I am fiercely protective of my zone of tranquility in my otherwise hectic, over-committed life lol.

I used to worry about appearing "closed off" or antisocial but as I've gotten older I've learned to value what helps me function at my highest level and no longer feel guilty indulging in some solitude after a hard work week.

I do greatly enjoy interacting with fellow reefers here at R2R and am thankful for a place to connect and share, even if it's not face to face.

I’m quite a confident person but are an introvert at heart. I have no issues showing any and all who do come to our place my tank and as per earlier comments, probably boring them with more information than they really want (-:

I am however probably more concerned about the quality of my display than others (non-reefers) are. My tank is still definitely a work in progress, at least to me, and at times I am certainly loath to share pictures or have folk over to view it as I was/am not happy enough with it at that time.

So for me it’s my inner perfectionist that is the problem more than anything else.

I prefer not to have random people over unless it’s regarding a sale of some sort. There are just to many weirdos out there.

In terms of friends and family they are more than welcome to check out my tank, as long as they can keep their kid under control (my wife has had a couple of friends over whose kids banged the glass and stuff. I was close to piledriving the little brats).
