I saw this pic on Facebook this morning, it was taken at an Asian foods market.

Such beautiful Maxima clams being sold for food.

I guess I have to look at the bigger picture though, this weekend is opening weekend for waterfowl season. I'll be out in a duck blind somewhere doing my best to take part. And I know there are many many people out there who would rather look at ducks than eat them.

I am sad because I would rather have them in my tank! HA!

I watched a video from 1989 about giant clams being aquacultured to replenish the ocean and then the tribes people could fish for them again. It was interesting that there was no mention of home aquaria. Apparently they taste good.

This was my question. I'll bet they're cheaper as food.

I'm sure they are, but the ones for aquariums are chosen for looks. The clams for eating don't need to be the prettiest maximas, just tasty.

As much as I hate the fact animals die, its the circle of life and my belief behind it all and how I feel is that as long as it does not go to waste and died for nothing I can live with. Whenever I eat any meat I finish it all as I'm getting close to full, unless I know for sure I will finish it later. I have a deep respect for any forms of life, and respect the animal that died in order for me to eat it, the least we could do is finish it and not waste it.

Now for the dilemma i have to deal with as of yesterday is my sister went to the fair with my nephew and niece and came home with a goldfish and have it in a bowl, shes being stubborn as im telling her she needs to put it in something bigger and im offering bigger tanks for her for free, i have everything it needs all we need to do is put it in it. Won't listen, I will end up having to steal it. They really need to ban fish at fairs.

And if they didn't culture these clams for food, we wouldn't have cultured clams for the hobby!

Me too!

I've seen the same video, it was great!

I wonder how the price as food compares to the prices in the hobby.

They are really cheap in the food industry.

yeah. that's interesting... I wonder where that was at? I know you mentioned Asian market.. but where in the world? US?

The person who took is lives in Japan, other than that I have no clue.

I agree, they should have a looks selection and eat the brown one's lol.

And if they didn't culture these clams for food, we wouldn't have cultured clams for the hobby!

Exactly.

It is my understanding that right now every cultured Giga's clam is ether going into the food industry or back into the reefs.

Well they are of course much cheaper to buy to eat because they aren't getting shipped halfway around the world trying to keep them alive in good health. Even if they are shipped a distance for food they dont have to be shipped as nicely as the ones we get. Also we pay for looks. They can eat the brownest clam and I bet its still yummy.
A friend of mine told me they sell for less than a few bucks each for food...thats where I should buy my clam filter ;)
