Lately I've been reading many threads from back in the days that are created on R2R.
Thought it's fun for the Vets but also educational for all newbies to read about how they that time discussed topics.
Every few days I will post a new ;) old ;Smuggrin thread "LOL".
Today "invalid and outdated lighting info" https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/invalid-and-outdated-lighting-info.10537/
Positive about these threads is that they never were long threads. :p

Any Comments....

2008! Boy I was fresh out of high school in 2008 lol

I giggle when I see old threads that say LED lighting just isn't worth it yet because that is what I was told over and over when I first started. Now both of my tanks are LED only. I've had halide, t5, PC, and the LED is definitely my favorite, probably because I hate changing bulbs;) It's also sad to see all those unfamiliar names (to me at least). It is hard to believe how many people give up, why would you want to ever leave the most frustrating hobby ever?

LED's was something from the future........... like "where I'm going there are no roads"
Ppl do hit that "brick wall" or as I'm refereeing to "Swimming in a bleached reef" https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/h...utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=January_15_2018

I had my 30th reunion from HS :p

Don't even say the number 30, I hit those dreaded digits tomorrow ;Yuck. I just got myself out of the reef blues, and even though my tanks looked depressing, which made me depressed, I never once though of quitting. Tearing down one of the tanks? Sure, but never quitting entirely;) I think we need a support section just for members to give each other pep talks lol. Then maybe we can talk members into staying in the hobby before they give it up forever!

Throwing back at ya, I have been mulling over current Trends and wondering If they are just that, what will be learned long term that we will discount current practices due to chasing numbers and the expense to do so. In the 80's wet-dry's and bio-balls were all the rage, 90's was the birth of the fuge using a thick leafed algae/seaweed (forgot name) then the Ceramic bricks and now its Triton sumps with chaeto as the sole export method.
Now Am I hearing that Water changes and MH lighting are coming back into Fashion:confused: ....Soon Reefers will have a Hallmark Holiday, once they find out how much money is spent on this hobby. Ocean or Reef day!

I gave up twice already, once in the 80's and again around Y2K. Both times I threw everything out saying that I would never DO IT again......... They will be back or they were never really in.

Triton is on its way out already.
The ICP testing is what keeps the hobbyist believing that their system is perfect even though in some of these systems corals are fading and fish swimming upside down.

Well then Buy The All NEW REEF RITE orthopedic;)

2008 was a couple of years before I set up my current system. I didn't even know about T5's...I was just butchering my old lighting which was MH/PC. The local reefers started pushing me to LED's a few years later.

I still got VHO's on a FOWLR, they were a used upgrade from an old fixture that took odd sized triton tubes.

PC or power compact were good lights but just too much heat.
I ran for a long time PC on freshwater planted.
They don’t refer to par but watts per gallon

MH and SVHO back in 2000 for me. DIY LED multi-channels today. I also agree about Triton - I don't see any longevity. They have at least two challenges in front of them one being supply chain (lack of) and secondly two other methods that have a longer history of success. The Dutch excel in that space.

I do think fewer water changes are a thing especially those living in water rationing and politically inept states such has California and Nevada.

Lol!
It’s funny that you mention the Dutch excel in that space.

I am surprised that Salt water purification is not even addressed (out of the tank). Think of all the salt buckets and gallons going down the tube, not to mention all the contraptions, additives and media's we spend bucks on.
Cant help to think A sand filter(pool) with a layer(s) of carbon and maybe a resin Polish could be the answer for those with larger systems

Makes you think twice when you do a lot of water changes.

Wise guy ;)

But to be serious I wouldn't it put past any lawmaker in California to implement something. My comment about fewer water changes though are due to tiered water charges here. I'll leave it at that before this turns into something it shouldn't. But yeah - more than likely I'll be setting up storage for NSW that I'll collect while doing a day scuba trip in Monterey.

15 years ago we didn’t think that corals from different regions would be limited or even a total export stop as with fish too.
Next year April 1st they could implemented a coral tax on corals sold.
Not only the corals that are imported but every coral sold in the trade.
