I throw stuff out all the time - though it is usually what I call 'under branches'. Even when giving better stuff away I get people that don't show up when they say they will or ask me if I can deliver it to them …… REALLY! I've just grown completely weary of buying and selling used, so I mostly don't do it anymore.

Sorry, but that is simple? Buy bags, buy Styrofoam box, buy heat packs, buy a box, and ship? None of that is free, especially overnight shipping. So you just turned that $5-10 frag into a $70 one. Doubt many would actually be willing to pay the shipping costs for cheap corals, and I personally wouldn't eat that cost.

My total packing costs are on the order of an additional $5 per shipment. Thats per shipment, not per frag. Shipping costs of course depends on the shipping method (but her I will point out that I've received dozens of corals, from soft to SPS, that were successfully shipped 2-d instead of overnight).

On the contrary. If the marginal cost of producing the frag is so low people are throwing it away, the market price for that frag should be extremely low. Selling frags of that coral for a low price is correcting a distorted market. It is a positive good that we should strive for, not something to be avoided.

Even if 2nd day is what, $15-25, plus shipping materials being $5, if we just give the coral away it is still asking people to pay $30. Notice how people even in this thread aren't saying "I'll pay you $30 for what you guys are throwing away", its "if anyone is close to X I'll take the corals".

Same here. I go in with a syringe of kalk paste every few weeks and melt away mushrooms that have spread all over.

I have given them away and sold frags for really cheap out of my tank after doing maintenance and more often than not my frags end up for sale on here immediately afterwards. Not only do they end up for sale but usually as some high end coral that they are really not. I'd rather just throw them away than see them end up in hands of people trying to make a dollar. This practice frustrates me. I am more than willing to share what I have to help out someone else in the hobby. Just don't post it for sale on the same forum where I just gave it to you.

Just received a new bottle of cyano today, Ill be fragging up a new batch this week. I basically get ripped off for what I sell them for but in return I acquire a lot of new unique plugs.
I only recently started trading with a LFS prior it was all trading and giving away to those in my circle but I have thrown away some nice buttons, zenias, gsp... I have gorgeous
GSP and although it can get out of control I never have trouble getting something for it these days.

I picked some up a couple months ago pretty cheap. The frag was large enough that noticing new growth is kind of hard without old pics.

If we have a free coral forum we should have a protocol for how to request and what the requestor is responsible for providing. I would be happy to pay for shipping costs and all consumables but I would need to know what to provide.
Id even be happy to assemble a shipping kit and send it as part of the request just would probably need some guidance on what to provide.

This is why brick and mortar stores are still so valuable, as much as we sometimes deride them for pests and disease. Not many hobbyists maintain thousands of gallons, take trades, accept credit cards, are available regular hours, and will maintain hundreds of gallons of excess flex capacity.. lol.

I'd never throw it away. LFS will always do trades. And even if its only 5 bucks I'm cool with that. Hell even if I have to give them for free its fine with me. The more I'm in there the more deals I get

I've thrown away plenty of LPS, and softie clippings. My LFS is a 2 and a 1/2 hour drive, and they won't take anything in on trade. I have no reef club close by, and no one around me is a reefer. There are a few FOWLR tanks around, but they do not want to get into corals.

I've thrown away so many clippings and dead skeletons(when I first started out) in the woods next to my house, in a 1000 years scientists will think this part of upstate NY was once covered in a dense reef. lol

Where are you again homer? I'm between Syracuse and Rochester. I'm an hour away from the stores, but for free, I could take a Sunday drive for a rescue.

Sorry to join in as well, I'm in upstate and may also be interested rather than it going to waste.

Exactly why i'm going sps dominant. By the time I get to this point I will have educated myself on shipping and purchased the equipment to do so. Flood the forum with affordable, good size frags... throwing them away isn't an option to me.
