Hello friends,
Now is time to get an skimmer for my build, 40g breeder DT and a 30g sump. Income tax coming so I have a couple of bucks to buy an skimmer. I can't go crazy and buy something way to expensive ( 3 kids). What would be your recommendation keeping in mine that I'm contemplating in upgrade my tank later to a 75g?

The Reef Octopus 110INT is what I currently use on my 40 breeder. It's good for up to 100 gallon tanks. But BRS recommends it for a 75. I've used this one for two years now and it's never once given me an issue that I didn't cause. Always pulls a good skim and broke in relatively quickly :) Plus coralvue's customer service is outstanding.

If you want to go budget, but still have a good performing skimmer, go with an ASM Mini-G. Comes with a Sicce pump and works great. It what I run on my 50 gallon and pulls out a cup a week of nasty gunk. If you want to go with something a little more modern and fancy, go with a Aquamaxx or E-Shoppes. Both are reasonably priced and work well with a few more bells and whistles.

Great. Thanks for your suggestion. I like the footprint.

Thanks a lot for you time and suggestions. I will check the reviews on those.

I am going to second the Reef Octopus 110INT. I love Reef Octopus. They make quality equipment. I actually use a RO skimmer I use the
Reef Octopus SUPER REEF OCTOPUS SRO-3000SSS. Now i know you don't need anything that big but Reef octopus is great you will have it for a long time. Just saying.

Now, my sump drain baffle is 12" high and the skimmer have 7" to 8" water depth. Do I have to put on a stand to raise the skimmer and get the recommended level?

That's What I do. I made a Skimmer stand out of PVC. i suggest that you go with the recommend water depth for the skimmer for best performance. DIY stand are cheap. Measure the circumference or the diameter and get a piece of pvc tall enough to lift it to the recommend water depth. Worked for me and cost less than 5 buck. Skimmer stand from BRS can be expensive.

Yes, you can get pre made adjustable stands or make one out of egg crate or pvc

Right, I been doing a few DIY on my setup that save me a few bucks. That's an easy one. Thanks for your suggestion.

Darnit Crabs, you beat me to it lol... yea, just use egg crate from somewhere like HomeDepot. Cut it to size and you are all set..

I agree with the reef octo skimmer.

With PVC i just get a big enough cut to sit my Skimmer on. With egg crate what type of Glue can you use that won't harm the reef and livestock? This is good stuff.

If u look used, u can find some decent deals on vertex omegas. Very good quality. I’ve also run eshopps axium. Hard to beat their new prices with sicce pumps.
