Time to dose Nitrates!

watchguy.
you have been the biggest poopooer when i first brought up nitrate dosing.

when you exasperate a situation where i find it less-than-friendly (or assume such) ill naturally get a little defensive.

i dont mind discussing anything and everything in terms of science. however, some of those questions seem to point me to cite my sources or that i am just making stuff up on the fly, in my fairy tale land trying to mislead the community.

i assure you, this is not the case.

i dont mind extending the olive branch and being civil if we can hit a reset button between us.

i hope through this info, some of the old 1990s or 1970s reef keeping strategies kind of die because a lot of the time it is an old wive's tale.

remember when tv would rott your brain?
or if you are cold and wet you will catch a cold?

i find it fascinating some of the research on our mixotrophic lil friends. hopefully collectively we can expand upon it.

i didnt mean to tear in to you too rough, but i kind of get tired of repeating myself and finding some white paper i read months ago / citing it.

also the world wide web has a trove of information. it was meant to be the information highway. a simple google and cross checks will cite many many sources.
if you imply i should be picking up a book on the subject, i am sorry. i just look at data.
i dont care the story.
-if you believe i should be in the field conducting this research... it is a hobby to me. nothing more.

agreed. hence why i aired it.

i dont have anything really to prove. i can go back to my research and adjust in my own personal tank.

no crusade here. do what you guys do. not like any discussion ive seen is beyond the norm.

ill say this...
i am not here to get any point nor do i care. i can just state research and what i can apply to the hobby.

ill continue practicing what i preach on my own tank. dont need some kids thinking i imagined it on the fly.

tbh. just apply the basics. leave me out of it. ill be happier.

Russ, it's the tone that is the issue. No one has a problem with the info you present (they may disagree, but that's not the same thing). For example, in this post, you say, "dont need some kids thinking i imagined it on the fly." It's the condescension in that type of statement that is a problem and furthermore is against the rules of the site. Remember, apply the golden rule even in disagreements (...ESPECIALLY in disagreements). It just keeps the environment friendly for everyone. :)

dan,
i agree. and maybe some other threads kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

if i am too condescending it is best to not ask me advice. plenty of others that will fill in the blanks.

like i said. when i receive incorrect information from others here (even most revered on this site) i kinda lose motivation.

nevermind the fact that everyone dosing is stating the same thing i said would happen.

been called a ton of things recently. i really dont care here since even the guy with a phd at an ivy league college misleads people at the expense of ease of explaination.

i offered the olive branch already. but tbh i dont really care.

i hope you understand.

good luck

I understand that you disagree with others, but as you do so, you do have to make your case in a way that shows respect for them. For example, you just accused Randy of misleading people, and I don't think that accusation is necessary to your case...you can state your disagreement without getting personal with people or presuming to know their intentions, and if you can't, well, then it's probably better to walk away from the conversation.

When i get mad i go look at how awesome my tank is.

Well russ265 i read your messages and try to follow them . Please don't let the few ruin it for them many that do follow and listen . Some of us appreciate the work you do to find the right answer .

its not unheard of for par to fluctuate. id say you get 575 par and be done.
600 par at the surface is just fine for most corals.

if corals are darkening, thats a good sign if they were pale.
surprised tips of certain coral werent flourescing, however i never saw milli tips doing it.
After looking at the readings today I got around 570 par at surface. But then It drops like crazy in my water so its only around 250-300 for the SPS. I'm thinking about buying more hooks and lowering light even more.

For nitrate reading tested and got around 2pmm again. (I think I might have spilled some powder when I was mixing) Going to test again when I get home from work. But this is Day 2 no Nitrate dosing.:) Birdsnest looks good today, but an Acro is completely closed up the pink one. All other corals look good though so not going to worry about it.

Are you running carbon by chance. Thats a big drop in par. I am leaning to clarity of the water.

Yeah I have BRS rox 0.8. Water is clear as a sunshine. No clue why the big drop in par. I leave my Wavemakers on when I test could that be why?

Its like maybe 4 inch from first SPS to and 8 inch to the last SPS.

This is a tough one!
Thinking it now may be the ability for light penetration
Im sorry if stated before but what is your fixture?

@Chrisss may I ask what lights you running?
Maybe you already mentioned that but I'm of charts today as the Texans blew the chances for the Super bowl and I missed the BIG Powerball jackpot of 800+ mil just by 4 numbers.......... well I have another chance on Wednesday 01/13 but I have to change my plan of spending as I only had a plan for the 800+ mil and now it will be 1.3 Bil............ decisions.........decisions...........decisions! :(

Following along.. I learned the hard way that a ulns can wreck havoc on a tank if not done correctly. Since raising nutrients to what some may consider high, my tank could not look better. G L

Right on glad to hear its working out for you :-)

Im running 4x54w T5Ho its a retrofit kit so its all DIY. It has individual reflectors so they seem powerfull enough. I only have a 55g so its the only T5ho that fits. I wanted a 6x54w to be sure but too much wasted light. Im runing 2 ATI blue plus 1 Coral Plus and a Atinic +@twillard
