I am trying to get my levels down..I have tried everything I can think of and can't break the 20 ppm mark on NO3 and I am still battling red slime..I do water changes..Run a NAC 6 skimmer..have a refugium set up with cheato..I run a GFO reactor..I am lost..Dosing is the last thing I can think of that I haven't tried...I do not feed my fish..I feed my LPS Fauna Marin pellets 2x a week..and sparingly at that..I intend on dosing vinegar instead of vodka specifically because it is a little weaker..MY DKH floats around 9..PH is 8.2..Is this to high to begin a dosing regimen?..If it is would it matter if I dosed fewer ml and started of slower?..

Hi WVUReefer!

So lots to deal with here! Lets begin with your typical regimen and filtration. One important detail I'd like to ask about is the timing of everything. This problem your reef is suffering takes a while to solve.. and I want to ask about what solutions you've tried and more specifically how long you've tried each for.

In a vague description (Until we get more information) here's what I would try for your situation:

- I just don't recommend dosing anything (Especially carbon dosing) as it is royally complicated to get right and requires quite a bit of time tweaking. Unless you have been doing it for a while.. I would just halt it for now.

- With the visible problems (Algae/cyano/etc) I would export them as soon as possible via manual removal. It isn't fun but it's the best way to remove the problem and the cause of the problem (Phosphates, "funk") at this stage of the game.

- What's your waterchange schedule? I would try a pretty typical regimen of about 10% per week for now. Doing none is not recommended, and too much could actually cause another problem via livestock stress, etc.

- This one is pure theory on my part and take it with a grain of salt: I am not a fan of refugiums as filtration, but I believe them great for other things. I would not depend on this method to truly help your problem out. Adding more plants won't help you out.. again just my meager opinion.

- You probably already do this, but run your skimmer wet, better to grab as much as possible and correct salinity than possibly not grab the extra funk from the tank.

HTH for now. Keep us updated.

Oh! About the GFO reactor, which stuff are you using??

okay...My tank is 65g..I use BRS GFO at 120ml..which I change monthly..I WC about 10% every 2 weeks..I use red sea coral pro salt..I have found that with this salt and it's tendency to mix with high parameters its is easier to do a little WC but more often..

I use the salt salt and love it. What about the solutions you've tried, and for how long have you've tried each for?

Increase size and frequency of water changes. I do weekly 40g water changes on my 180 (220 total gallons)
0 nitrates/nitrites/phosphate. Best way to get ride of that stuff is to dilute it out from what I've been told.

Maybe I missed it but how do you get your water? Do you filter the water for your water changes I guess?

Well I agree for the most part with Electrobes, however I don't think larger water changes more frequently (weekly) at least until you can get things under control will cause an issue. I used to do the same 40g water change on my 75 (90g) weekly before we upgraded. Never any issues.

Listen to the guy above me, his tank is awesome! (I just visited your tank page OurReef, nice tank!)

I have about 12 sps frags..1 clown..1 pygmy angel..1 lettuce nudi..elelgance.. 3 maximas..1 crocea..4 BTAs..flat brain coral..2 lobos..torch..umbrella..various zoas..kenta tree..finger leather..been in the hobby for 12 yrs just never had this issue..

Thank you, my wife and I work hard on it.

You don't seem overly stocked for fish, 4 btas could possibly produce a lot of waist depending on how much you feed them. (Mine go number O after every feeding). It's odd too but it seems like they make a small little fish head or krill into a two foot brown string.

Clams should help a little, but I have no experience with softies. I was under the impression that the create a chemical that inhibits sps from growing (as fast). Doubt that is contributing to your no3 problems though.

I'm not by any means an expert, don't take what I say as an end all. From my personal experience (9years) 99% of all my water quality issues ( be it hair alge to a wandering magnifica meeting a power head) can be fixed with water changes. Give it a try, do two 10 or one 20% water change a week for a month or so and see what happens. And don't dose.

With this or anyo other salt mix, if your not using RO/DI water, it will mix at high vlaues.

I Vodka Dose, and have been for a couple years now. Need help with it, let me know. I don't have any issues with my water. And by the looks of it, your on top of or trying to clear it up.
