So I have a big shipment of corals (mostly zoas palys) coming in via UPS from the Cherry Corals event.

First time I've bought corals online.

1) Do I float the bags to get temp stable?
2) Or do I get them into clean saltwater ASAP?
3) Or does that even matter with them being corals?

The only thing I do is float to equalize temperature.

I then dip in treated tank water prior to going into a tank.

Float for temp
Drip for Acclimation to your water (some choose not to)
Dip for buggers
Rinse in clean tank water from your DT
Enjoy.

Do you dip your corals at all? I'd say float them for 15-20 minutes, dip them, rinse off in clean tank water, and then in the tank they go. Unless you run any type of quarantine.

Using what product?
I have been using Bayer for the pests. If I have algae concerns I may also keep them in clean water for 30 minutes after the first dip and then dip them in H2O2 also.

I do have Expel from Underwater Creations that I'm hoping is effective. It should be safer and more environmentally friendly than Bayer.

Using what product?
Bayer is more readily available, pretty much any store that does lawn and garden including hardware stores. Otherwise you can get coral rx from brs or marine depot.

I'll have to buy this locally.

Do I pay major attn to any EXPIRATION DATE on the bottle? Bc the place I'm buying from may have a bottle that's been sitting on the shelf for 12-18mos

I've had my Bayer for almost 2 years, so I doubt it. Still seems effective.

I also recommend using your phone camera as a magnifying glass. You can zoom in at the plug and base of the coral looking for pest eggs. Dips don't treat the eggs so its important to keep them out.

There was a thread on this a while back, and I think the general consensus was that it doesn't "expire" just looses its potency slowly over time like aspirin or over the counter medicine.

I take the frags out of the bags as soon as I open the shipping container and put them in separate screw top containers (specimen containers for smaller frags, or Ziplock containers for larger frags). I add a little tank water then float for a while to bring to temp. I will go back and with a turkey baster, remove some of the water out of the container and replace with tank water. Re-float. I will do this 3-4 times and then dip, rinse and put in the tank. I just use Two Little Fishies ReVive for my dip.

Yeah.... I'm too freaked out using a Bayer product that's sitting in some FeedNSeed alongside WeedKiller and RoundUp

I much rather use an idiot proof product especially for corals that have specific measurements in the instructions

I would agree with you on this. The stuff is poison and probably ok to use with the proper precautions, but I have concerns that a lot of reefers don't take proper measures when handling it.

I use the ReVive and it smells just like the commercialy available cleaner, Fabuloso. I swear Julian Sprung is just re-bottling that stuff and selling it for coral dip. :p

Not sure what is in Fabuloso, but I know Revive is just pine oil with lemon peel extract. It does sound like a floor cleaner!

Agree. Floating is so important. Shocking the new corals with a diff temp water is not okay. I wait an hour or so with all new corals. Which allows me to prep everything for the dip. Good luck

When I use it, my wife thinks I am cleaning my room. :-)

I have to ask, do you find that this is effective against pests? I haven't tried it because it makes no claims to be helpful in that way. All it says is that it is a "cleansing dip".

I think it causes critters to "jump ship." I will usually find pods and other critters in the water when I remove the frag. I started using this stuff because a friend that had a large outdoor greenhouse propagation set up recommended it. That was years ago though. Just what I use. I am like Jim and don't care to handle the Bayer. Besides, not everything that comes in on frag plugs is bad. I do dislike killing off free pods. Maybe I have just been lucky. :D
