Total noob here. Need major advice

Would I need an auto top off with the biocube since it has a tight fitting lid?
I would hold off on an ATO until you get more familiar with everything first honestly. I have a 65gal tank with a DIY acrylic lid and I only have to top off maybe half a gallon once a week. Start simple and work your way up.

There are many tanks set up with tap water.
But those are for fresh water fish. :) You can use tap for fish only systems but corals like better water quality and most tap water has an allowable amount of minerals in it that does not work out for sensitive coral species. Recommend using RO/DI water for salt mixing for favorable results in a marine tank.

Some LFS sell premixed water but you have to rely upon their water treatment (ro/di!) which is as reliable as, well a local fish store. If you filter your own you can have a better idea of what you are adding into the mix. Same with salt. There are lots of brands and they do not all mix up to the same parameters. Some are better or more reliably repeatable than others. Also, traveling to the store to buy water is like going down to the river or the well to draw a bucket for drinking, it gets to be a pain in the back compared to plumbing. A home RODI unit for the tank allows you to walk shorter distances with the buckets.

Anyway, this is too long of a post for a Welcome to Reef2Reef, so I'll say check out the search feature and videos on here. Start a build thread and start learning about saltwater aquariums. They are worth the effort imo.!

an ato is something that you can buy to automate so you can forget about it. Like a lawn sprinkling system. Now its one less thing to worry about as it is taken care of automatically, better than you can do it yourself.
Imo, short money

Any cheap ones that are reliable?

By "freshwater" do you mean tap water?
If you mean tap water like city water, you dechlor it.

The rodi unit does that for you so no added chemicals are needed.
They are just so expensive. I don’t really have a laundry room it’s more of a closet type thing so I don’t have a place to put a holding tank. I’ve seen ones under sinks but Idk how to do that

you don’t necessarily need a holding tank for an RODI, just something to put the water in when you mix up a batch of saltwater. Holding tanks are more of a nice to have option rather than a need

How can I do water changes then? Don’t I need a place for the water to be stored when it comes out of the rodi?

you would need something to mix the water in like a brute trashcan. Some people like to store premixed water, and it’s a good idea. But it isn’t necessary per say.

That’s what I meant. I don’t have a place to store the water. How would I do it without a holding tank?

You don't need to store water. You turn your filter on, fill up a bucket with freshly made RO water, turn the filter off, add salt and mix it up. Now your ready for a water changed.

How long would it take to fill a bucket?

I started out using a garden hose attached to my rodi unit and only mixing about 5 gallons of saltwater at a time it's also pretty easy to hook one up under the sink they sell kits to do it all you would need is a drill for the waste water and ato you could hold off on and add water every couple days same thing I did starting out

Watch what kind of damsels you get, some of them can be very aggressive and I’ve had them kill clowns in the past
Ok. I haven’t done any research on fish yet. I just went to my lfs and saw a few that caught my eye. I definitely would get a pair of clowns tho. What are those small purple and yellow fish that are longer than tall? I live in Louisiana and lsu is my team so I would love to get one of those purple and yellow fish if they are fine with clowns. Just looked it up and is called a royal gramma. Can it go with a pair of clowns?

Anything deemed “reef safe” should get along fine in a community
