So a little background: I work in a hospital so illness prevention is of the utmost importance to me. I’ll be sure to buy a UV sterilizer for my tank. My main display is of 92 gallons. How to pick the right one? I know flow is important to target different things. Algae aside, does anyone know the right UV sterilizer for my tank in order to slow down disease propagation? Thanks!

IMO, UV is not necessary for a healthy and clean tank. However, if you must have one then I'd would recommend Aqua UV or Pentaire (Emperor) Aquatic. They have the specification that give you the flow rate for saltwater and aquarium size. For your tank size you will need a 25-40W unit.

If you read into the specs on any of them on BRS they will tell you a recommended tank size and flow rate.
Allright though I don’t really go there since I can’t order through them without extra fees in Canada :(. Though with the amazing amount of videos and reviews I had to get through to pick between gfo phosguard phosbond and phosnet was hoping for a quick fix this time :p

You don't have to order from them, but it's a one stop for specs on different sizes and models. I only have a 40gal, but have a 57watt UV on my tank. That way when I upgrade i'm still covered. Plus with the flow it allowed me to plumb it directly on my return.

I see, I’ve seen a lot of charts specifying flow and W amount to target specifics but looking for one that’s been tried and tested so what brand are you using?

Illness prevention and bacteria free are relevant in an operating room, not in a reef tank. If you think that killing bacteria is healthy in a reef tank, you are sadly mistaken. Without bacteria, a reef tank would die. Bacteria feed filter feeders and are the beginning of the food chain in a reef. To start a reef tank, most inoculate with bacteria. Healthy gut cavity bacteria are required for auto immune system.

Errr, thinking about ich and marine velvet in the water column not beneficial bacteria. It is said that using a uv sterilizer reduces propagation rate or are you saying it is useless?

UV is indiscriminate. Useless & necessary are differrent things. At times, UV is beneficial. Too much of a good thing is not always good.

I get that which is why I’m wondering the best device to use for it in a 92g. I am not willing to create a sterile environment just being mindful of fish health and would want to be given the chance to treat before it is too late.

I have a feeling my French to Formal English translations fired up some egos around here :p When you learn a second language through books it might make you look pretentious I guess lol

Your translations are fine. Nothing pretentious. If I put Cajun French on you, you may not understand me.

From la belle province, eh? Salut mon ami!

A UV sterilizer will reduce propagation rate, it won't however iradicate ich or velvet. It is an important part of ich /management/, but not ich /eradication/.

Your best bet to be safe from ich/velvet and other such things is a rigorous quarantine process.

Yeah, I started up with a 65g then decided to make it in a qt tank. About that, I’ve been researching prophylactic treatments but cupramine spells too harsh for prevention in my mind so I’ve been thinking of Paraguard. I hope it’s true to description. I am about to purchase some. Did you ever use it?

Hmmm since you mention it, what’s in your signature? It should read: Laissez le bon temps rouler! :p

Before deciding on equipment. Decide what you want your tank to be. Pick a theme and build on it. When I started marine tanks in 1971, there was no hobby forums or internet. We pioneered alone. And we made mistakes.

John Tullock book, “The Natural Reef Aquarium” brought it all together for me. He suggest a compatiable biotheme or a pivitol species in which everything else in the tank is compatiable with pivitol species. I choose a mixed garden lagoon with ornamental macros and filter feeders like flame scallops & Sea Apples. The single most important point to be taken from the blook is

LESS TECHNOLOGY / MORE BIOLOGY.

The best prevention for ich is a healthy tank. I feed live black mussels to my reef tank everyday. In my 25 year old 75G tank, I received Blue Tangs with ich visible in shipping bag. Spots cleared up in three days, itching & scratching gills persisted for 7 days and then cleared up. That was ten years ago.

Does les designate feminine as opposed to le for male?
Les is plural but it’s typical to use that expression in singular form in french as opposed to English. The expression: « good times » would translate to: « c’était le bon temps » I tend to prefer English over french nowadays because it is more concise. About your other post I was at first charmed by the Berlin method coupled with Chaeto to export nutrients but hundreds of hours of YouTube & researching has then made me a bit paranoid. I mainly kept on watching Mile High Reefers in the end and tend to trust his advice on prophylactic treatment. Though, I really do think treating a possibly healthy fish with cupramine is over the top.
