I also ordered a new skimmer. The one that came with the tank was pure garbage. I ended up with a DC powered Simplicity protein skimmer, rated for 240 gallons.

Got the new skimmer installed! It was skimming in about 15 minutes of initial setup!

Nah, I wanted to use a different skimmer. I also changed my return pump. I see you put your pipe towards the front of your sump and the skimmer behind it. I'm thinking that has to be tough when you need to clean your skimmer.

Yeh that was a mistake of mine. I glued the upvc backwards and didnt have a choice but to do it that way. I may end up getting the conversion kit and re doing it.

Finally figured out a we to redo my UPVC pluming...lol

I incorrectly glued pieces together when setting the tank up, forcing me to have the filter sock in the front and the skimmer in the back. CadLights wanted $60 for a upvc to pvc conversion kit. I got some stainless steel hose clamps and 1.75" ID pvc hose for less than $20. Voilà

September 17 Update. Algae has landed. Lol

I suppose it's time for a real cleanup crew. I want to buy from ReefCleaners.com but I'm sure they will have to deal with hurricane Irma this week.

Well I attacked the algae from multiple angles and have beat those demons back to hell where it came from! Lol

My Euphyllia frags from the WWC booth at MACNA.

And a finally algae free FTS!

To rid the tank of algae, I employed several methods.

1. 3 days lights out
2. Changed salts to Brightwell NeoMarine
3. Added pods and dosing phyto daily from Algae Barn
4. Added a real cleanup crew from Reef Cleaners
5. Added Tom the tomini tang. He loves hair algae.
6. Last but most importantly, I balanced out my N and P levels. PO4 was undetectable and I used Brightwell NeoPhos to bring it up to 0.08ppm. NO3 is at 8ppm.

48 hours algae / dinoflagellates free.

Only took a couple of weeks to get back to an algae free tank.

So I have taken the plunge to dump LEDs and go back to what just works, T5s. Waiting on the fixture to arrive next week. Here’s a video of my tank with LEDs for the last time.

Hey. You gave it a try. I happen to like LEDs but I like T5s as well, so I use both. What a difference it makes when you combine the two. Growth is great and the functionality of the LEDs is a plus. Make sure you post a video of your progress with the T5 lighting. Good luck.
