Interesting about high light. Mine always closed up any time i tried to increase light. But they grew pretty quick in low light
 
No meter means you were eyeballing your lighting changes. (i.e. not measuring) Easy to understand your corals' reaction. :)

A lux meter can be had for free and a decent handheld costs less than $15, delivered. Almost crazy NOT to use a meter these days. :) :) :)
