I am wondering who else uses a turkey baster to go in throughout the rock work in their tank and blow out the detritus? Anyone feel that it is unneeded?

If so please add how often you do this.

Haha I guess I may not be the only one lol yep I do it periodically or when I don't have anything else to do on my tank and just bored from looking at it with nothing to do haha
Once-twice a week and I'm always surprised how much comes out of my rocks remember there are organisms that live within your rock that poops too!

I have before but not often. I use it to feed and blow sand off of corals though. :D

I do it in my tank but only when I am cleaning, it looks like a dust storm when I get going. I also use an old Maxi Jet powerhead from time to time to really get in there and blow stuff around.

Same for me. I usually will use a powerhead to stir things up when I do a water change and will use the turkey baster once things settle to clean everything off well.

I use an old Walmart gift card and fan the rock vigorously. About 2 times a week. Since my tank is acrylic I use the card to scrape the walls.

I think the answer there is "Duh!" A turkey baster is the best invention for feeding, cleaning, and annoying fighting hermits...

I do agree that a MJ powerhead can get deeper into the rocks and cause more of a storm. I do this alot when the filter sock has been installed.

I use it at least once a week to blow detritus out of the rock work. I also use it on the sand to keep the top surface well agitated and detritus free, or a little bit of cyan on a frag. It's awesome!!!!

use it once a week just gotta be careful have knocked a few tips off some sps by getting too focused on the job lol I wait about an hour then clean the sponge on my mag. pump before I used the baster I was always forgetting when I last cleaned the sponge nothing worse than pulling a sponge out & seeing a ton of nasties going right back into the tank

Best tool a reefer can have. Blow the rock work off just before a water change. Move out any detritus that goes with the water you take out, the rest is suspended in the water column for removal by filtration and as food for coral and critters.

One of my most used tools due to my two triggers spitting rocks on my corals. I also use it to blow under the rockwork before a water change/gravel vacuuming. Also good to blow on Acros now and then to test for aefw.
