Hello everyone!
I thing I'm going through the ugly stage, my tank is 1ish month old, but I'm confused ! Can someone confirm me this algea is indeed diatom and not Dino or cynao ?! The microbubbles on it make me doubt a little bit ! First appears of this brown algea was 2 days ago!
Not really looking to get ride of it(if it's diatom) but if it's dino I'll have to do something and not just "let it pass"

No3 20
Po4 0.15
Light: radion xr15 G5 Blue
Tank : Waterbox AIO 20 gallon cube

Thanks all for helping :)

My guess would be dinoflagellates based on the bubbles in the brown matter. But doesen't make sense if your no3 and po4 are at those levels? If you have an extra $100-150 you can p/u an entry-level cheap microscope to find out for sure.

+1 on buying a microscope, doesn't have to be 150 bucks though, I got me a 25 Au$ national geographic one that works fine.

This one is amazing. Used it on my tank water just because but bought it for my daughter. What I saw was just cool as hell. Stuff you would never see with the eye. Worth the buy if you can.

I'll get a microscope today to check it but I'm pretty sure it's diatom

I’d say Dino’s myself.. diatoms are more of a dusting not thick mats like that..
When I blasting it in the first rock it's like tiny dust, but on the sand when accumulate it's look like a little carpet

Tank might be a month old but the rocks look much older… if he started with dead dry rock sure but it appears it’s live rock.. unless it’s that caribsea rock or something that’s painted purple

Good point but that looks very much how my purple caribe sea rocks looked when I finally turned lights on and diatoms hit them. Sand is a little matty but I'm still guessing heavy batch of diatoms.

Def possible… wouldn’t be able to tell unless you put it under a microscope.. my last battle with Dino’s looked identical to his tank and it sucked! lol… if my new tank got that I might just hang up my gloves.. it’s too big to fight that battle and win! :expressionless-face:

Mine don't have this likely filament algea

That’s good! I’d lean more towards diatoms then and hopefully that’s all it is.. have you siphoned it out yet? Does it all come back over night?
Yes I have try to siphon the sand and it's coming back rapidly in the night

Hmmmm… both Dino’s and diatoms feed off light! They normally disappear at night and come out to play when the lights are on… you could also have a mix of cyano and diatoms giving you that thicker mat appearance… microscope is really only the true answer here unfortunately
