Pretty cool. Back many years ago I had a yellow tang that had a small growth on its dorsal fin. Back before I had access to MS222 or knew about clove oil. Went into a shallow pan, scraped the growth off, dabbed with iodine, back into display with no further growths.

There was a big fire in a oil field in Saudi so the company rang RedO dare he explained he was far too busy fighting fire in another area so they tried paddy o dare he said no problem I will be there 9am tomorrow. Two of the company representatives drove to the oil field at 8.45 and they where stood waiting and in the distance a white object coming over the dunes as it got closer it was a old transit van heading straight towards them they took a step back and the transit van went straight passed them and straight into the middle of the fire the back doors of the van flew open and a load of men jumped out stamping there feet and in no time the fire was out . The two company members approached Paddy O dare and said great job what will you spend your money on Paddy replied first of all I am getting some new brakes on my van

When I toured Texas A&M Mariculture Research Facility at Flour Bluff on North Padre Island; technicians concurred, that adding volume with tanks buried in the ground became a stabilizing heat sink & a heat source depending on which season that you were in. For us in South Texas our winters might be 12 days below freezing. By changing required operating temperature to cold water pool, you have eliminated expensive resistive heat. Evaporative cooling is the most cost effective method of cooling. A simple cascading step evaporates and adds oxygen.

Thermodynamics 101
BTU, Britual Thermal Unit is the amount of heat required to raise 1 pound of water 1 degree Centigrade.

When one pound of water evaporates, 1000 BTU of heat energy are required to complete phase change from water to vapor.

PS: A medium sized oak tree will evaporate 100G of water a day. Water weighs 8.34 lbs/G. Therefore evaporative cooling from one tree in a forest equals

1000BTU per pound times 100 G/D times 8.34 lbs/G

Equals 834,000 BTU of cooling per day.

I get most of the ornamental sponges from GulfCoast Ecosystem.

In speaking with Russ Kronwetter, diver/owner, he has found that these sponges require periodic excessive circulation for cleaning nuisance film algae. As I experiment with this fishless system, large amphipods graze boldly on front glass during lights on. Two weeks ago, I added 4 differrent variety if copepods from algae barn to all systems.

With this 30G fishless system, I will seed the Pod Brothers to outside 150G Rubbermade tanks in salt water tilapia experiment.

For systems that are heavy on macro algae, the byproducts (exudates) of photosynthesis are DOC (dissolved organic carbon). Coral exudates are mostly lipids & proteins and algae exudates are mostly glucose.

On Caribbean reefs, cryptic sponges process these exudates to feed the food chain at the microbial level with carbon rich detritus. @Paul B has something to say about MULM:

You need to keep us update interesting fish less system. You have me very interested. Especially o n the rubbermaid I love you are trying different things that's how this hobby moves forward. Different ways of keeping marine

Because heat gain is my biggest issue in Austin, Texas everything I do is focused on removing heat. Evaporative cooling even in high humidity Florida is able to reduce daytime air temperatures of 95 into lower 80’s. In lower humidity Texas, I could maintain water temperatures in the upper 70’s with spray jets and large cooling fans but I could never recover the electrical expense to cool or to heat with tight temperature control.

Logic says to find a desirable product that does not need to be pampered. Live rock with small inverts like amphipods, copepods, byozoves and feathers of many colors suits my taste. Adding colorful ornamental seaweed also adds diversity of texture and colors. Because of the fast growing nature of most green seaweeds, I have focused on “Red MacroAlgae”. I recently have been very pleased with a seasonal red macroalgae that comes in a grab bag of assorted seaweed. I have two established favorites: Bortacladia and Gracilaria Hayi:

Botryocladia is a beautiful specimen that does very well in the marine aquarium. It features stiff, lightly calcified branches with bright red air bladders. It resembles a cluster of grapes and is sometimes referred to as Red Grape Caulerpa, although it is not a species of Caulerpa at all. Depending on the species, it can grow in rather large clumps attached to rocks and coral fragments in depths of up to 30 feet or more. It is very hardy and seems to do well in aquariums with good water quality and low to medium lighting. There are several varieties available in the aquarium trade, but identification can be difficult as they all have the same basic characteristics.​

Funny I find the Red Seaweeds over here do good in the aquarium. One bright green seaweed that grows is sea lettuce but the problem is everything in the tank love eating it

Update on introductions into 30G sponge tank. And some background on Caribbean theme tanks. and diver collected uncured live rock.

Three years ago, I set up dual 55G tanks to process 200 pounds of uncured diver collected maricultured live rock from Gulf Live Rock. As I curated this rock, premium rocks were added to 75G & 120G display tanks.

Now, because I need to get into the wall and repair an electrical problem, I am first removing signature items like ornamental sponges and gorgonions. Because these two 55G tanks have flat worms (Red Planaria), I will sanitize the transfer.

TO SANITUZE: Use a 10 minute soak with flatworm exit and a 30 second 10% bath in 3% peroxide
