Im about to start my reef soon, I just noticed that my one clown is infected with ich....

I just put my dragonette in too :(

Now only one clown is infected and i beilved that maybe my royal gamma is too :(

I have a cleaner shrimp in the tank but he doesnt look interested in cleaning anything other than the rock (found he wont touch ich lol)

29g
Reef octopus BH-1000 HOB skimmer
1.025 salinity
Amonia- untraceable
Nitrites- untraceable
Nitrates- untraceable
PH- 7.9

I check salinity with a refractometer

I have no corals in the tank

Is hypo a good idea? and will it affect my ability to get corals in afterward or limit the time until i can get them?
If it comes back do the corals get hurt in anyway during treatments?
My LR has a ton of coraline on it, will i lose that?
I just found how much ICH is 180% different in marine aquariums lol

The clown is eating a little bit, ive been giving him a micture of brine shrimp, mysis, clams, and osters but he looked really bad this morning
I dont have a QT either... WHAT SHOULD I DOOOO

I think the only way to save the fish will be to set up a hospital tank and dose for ich. You need to leave your DT fallow for 6-8 weeks until the ich dies out.

Corals will not do well with ich medication since it is copper based (same for inverts). So medicate only in the hospital tank. Just get a 10 gallon tank and put 10 gallons of your tank water in it and start medicating asap.

Really? theres nothing else i can do?
I JUST got done with the nitragin cycle and add 2 fish in 3 weeks then boom.... Im about to lose it lol

There is a seachem powder stuff you can treat with and its reef safe...I know for a fact cuz I used it with coral and certs in the tank with no problem... My clowns did the same thing. It was clear in a week's time. I also fed rods reef food which contains garlic which helped a lot. Give me a few and ill go up front and get the name for it.... Petco doesn't carry it so you may need to go to a lfs for it. But clowns are bad about breaking out from stress and know that the ich will stay in the sand and tank. It's always there so other fish may break out. Feed garlic and its supposed to help the immune system. And treat with this stuff.

You can try to boost the fishes immune system with vit c and garlic extract mixed in their food. I use a few drops of each on flake food...let it absorb for a couple minutes and than feed the fish.
I have had about 50/50 success and loss with this method.
Good luck. Sorry you get to 'experience' ich :squigglemouth:

Is that to kill the ich? I was planning on lowering my salinity and cranking up the heat in the tank

Probably go down to about 1.010ish and about 80F+

I'm a newb too and this is what the guys on my local forum told me to use...it worked! My clowns are doing great! And so are my verts and corals! Oh just another newb giving advice.... That mandarin needs lots and lots of pods to eat. If you dont have a good supply or can't buy them A LOT or can't get the fish to eat flake or frozen... It may be a good idea to return it until you can... I wanted one too but I researched and this is what I learned.... Most have a primary diet of pods and unless you have an established tank with plenty or get one that has been trained to eat flake/frozen....it will starve.... I didn't want it to perish from my noobness so I left it at the store. :(. If I'm wrong...I'm sure others will correct me but this is what my research has pointed to.

+100 on the mandarin! Probably one of the most commonly killed fish in this hobby.....they starve to death so easily. There are however 'trained' ones that will eat frozen foods, but must be fed often as they have no way to store food...no true stomach.

I bumped my heat but left my salinity at 1.025. This stuff worked good on the ich. I bumped temp to 79-80 gradually over a couple days time, fed food with garlic, and treated with the seachem.... I think the combo really helped.... And my clowns went from no spots to covered in like a days time. I also added prime 1x with my initial water change to help them with their slime coat so they could shed the crap.... Found out later I didn't really need it and it makes the skimmer go crazy....

I would also go to Walmart and buy a cheapo 10 or 20 Gallon setup for a qt tank... Something you can tear down over and over... I wish I'd known this when I set up my tank 6mo ago.... It would have saved me treating my tank for sure.... And research research research.... I've learned this hobby is 30% research, 30% water change, 20% cost, and 10% staring at the tank..... But that 10% is totally worth the other 90% percent of bull. And there is no such thing as a saltwater expert cuz there is sooooooo much to learn and every tank is different... Just because my ich treatment worked for my tank does not by any standard mean it is guaranteed to work for yours..... Every set up is different but hey, compared to loosing the fish to ich its worth a try. Good luck and happy reefing!

My LFS buys the dragonettes from ORA that are bred to eat their frozen foods

But anyways back to the ich issue lol

Another question since im hearing a guy at work scare the living crap out of me lol

He said my $100s of dollars of LR and my live sand are screwed too, all that money i dropped into making the tank be correct the first time (odv now i got myself scared into a QT) rookie mistake...
But am i going to lose all that time spent?

What he means is ich will always live in the sand, rock, and heck the silicone of the tank no matter what. Once a tank gets ich it has it.... But the fish can be treated and it can be pretty well stopped..... Sorta... I'm sure someone else can explain better... What I was told it will lie dormant in the tank and every so often you will have an outbreak due to stress and will have to retreat the fish.....

Think of it like fish cancer.... You can treat it and make it go away but its always there and can rear its ugly head again so you have to treat again....

You really need to research ICH and its life cycle. What all your doing is totally useless. Only thing your going to accomplish is to stress the heck out of your fish.
The ICH will survive as long as it has a host to feed upon. You can do all the hypo-salinity and temp raising you want but it will do nothing to kill off the cysts that have fallen to the sand/rock waiting to hatch.
Remove the fish, treat in a hospital tank with a copper based med and allow your DT to fallow for 8-10 weeks. The only true way to rid your tank of ICH is to starve it out, period!

+1 on research.... I said that earlier. But what I was told was once you get ich its there laying dormant in the sand, rock, tank....until it can strike again.... The garlic is really good and I feed my fish the garlic food daily to help keep their immune system up.... I'd research other methods as well cuz like I said... What worked for mine may not work for yours... It's a 50/50 shot. Good luck and may the reef Gods be ever in your favor!

Oh and get a qt tank. It will save you money in the long run!

Well then... After reading all day long and finally asking just to see if im going to lose my investment here after seeing 10-15 different how to's and not trusting any of them. I decided to ask here. Sorry if i posted in the newb forum and not the **** forum
