Shake your head all you want lol !!! It's true and anyone who says that it keeps more consistent parameters and salinity compared to daily top offs is a STRIAGHT up liar. The difference between the two processes in a reef under 300 gallons in minuscule enough that you would never know the difference

Plus I have heard a TON of nightmare auto top off stories, I bet you have never read about a guy who manually overflowed his tank lol.

If you don't have an hour or two a day for ANY pet, you should not own that pet

I've tried all day not to reply to this but here goes, my ato does not do water changes, it doesn't feed the fish, it doesn't look at the sump 3-4 times a day, it doesn't call me at work and tell me the temp, PH, my controller does, it hasn't yet once brushed the Dino's off the rocks that I spend an hour vacuuming with a 1/4 hose. I'm not sure what you think an ato does but any help for me to enjoy just looking, watching your animals is nice in my book.

Trebor i have been keeping tanks since i was a kid and i do not have any ato or anything like that. I spend a little time each day topping off tank and checking my stuff. I keep things simple. Some people have the budget to where they can can have all the cool bells and whistles. I do not so i take care of my reef the old school way and it is very successfull. I tell people that its your piece of nature so you can do what ever you want. I wish that people here would just help and not make negative statements.

Nice work here Vizzle. I'm going to let you continue ranting. Your credibility declines every post.

Continue on. I'm moving to some threads that haven't been wrecked and show no promise. :lalala:

I run a very successful reef aquaculture business and have an amazingly loyal customer base, I do not need much "credibility"

That is amazing based on how you berate thousands of people on an open forum. Good for you guy. Might try being a bit more helpful, though. Kindness will get you a lot further than calling thousands of reefers liars.

what I think ATOs do is automatically top off aquariums lol. But please do not hesitate to respond to anything ever posted on reefing sites. The only way any of us can learn is by talking and debating tactics with other hobbyists.

Although it would be cool if ATOs really did all that stuff you listed lol

I do not believe calling Auto Top Offs lazy is exactly "berating thousands of people" lol ;). If you don't think ATOs are a sign of laziness, then we can agree to disagree

And even further about ato's for somebody who travels a lot like me, daily manual top off is not feasible. I can be gone for several days, and the evaporation rate can get to the point the return section of my sump is dry. This will result in my return pump cavitating and burning up, then the water in my sump can not reach my display. My heater is in my sump so then the water in the display will reach an equilibrium temperature with my house (since it is no longer heated), which will fluctuate while i'm out of town but I know it is not the right temp for my display tank inhabitants, so their health and life would be at risk. So, not only does my ATO keep my water level consistent but it also gives me a piece of mind while out of town. But I guess I am just lazy I can't fly home everyday to make sure that doesn't happen.

Post #9 you called me a liar. And thousands of other reefers. That I consider berating. It might carry more credence if it were from a self proclaimed propagation expert with an amazingly loyal customer base, though. Oh, wait... Nope.

Anyways, back to the actual topic. I'd do a water change and look at getting some float valves for the apex (as mentioned earlier) to alert you if anything like this happens again. I'm planning to so a gravity feed ATO and utilize float switches to warn me if the ATO reaches a level that is too high or if the sump reaches a level that is too high. I'm also planning to have another float switch in my skimmer drain that will shut off the skimmer and email me when it fills up so I can empty it (I won't pull the cup off that often as I have a neck cleaner so I don't have to spend so much time daily cleaning my skimmer)

I spent $67 on this from autotopoff.com, the pump pulls so little power the apex outlets won't shut off with out trickle sometimes, the sump overfilling wasn't the issue really there's plenty of room, 4gls is the most I ever have for topoff, the skimmer was about half full, I can't say for sure the ato caused this because there couldn't have been a gl in the bucket. It was a frustrating thing after waiting a week. I get ideas off of here, the old saying goes "there's several ways to skin a vizzle", lol! Sorry a cat!! Lol!! Unfortunately the bad usually comes with the good. Thanks everyone!! This is a good forum for the most part!

I don't want to offend anyone, but I can almost promise to show anyone who spend less than 30 mins a day on their system, a much nicer system of that same size, belonging to someone who DOES take the extra time for their tanks

1hr a week on my tank for maintenance-Leaves me with countless hrs with my lil critter light :) Practice makes perfect darlin ;)

How's the 40b with swing arm hydrometer (a necessity for water density), coral life digital thermometers, and coral life super skimmer 65 doing?

Good !! Anyone who says IO hygrometers are innaccurate is also lying lol (sorry liars), we even use it in my Marine Bio lab to take quick samples. And the super skimmer 65 gets a lot of hate, but it kicks major *** !! As much as my Reef Octopus, Bak Pak, or any other skimmer I run, except maybe the AquaC Remora.

The build has been slow though !! Our new out breeding system for our clowns has been taking up every moment and dollar of my time

tank looks good, calcium levels must be spot on to have so much coralline. Although spending just 1 hour on the tank per week shows to a trained eye like myself... And honestly keeps it from being the amazing system it could be

lol skin a vizzle !! Very clever !! ;) you all got pretty bent out of shape from a simple comment.

Any further off topic bickering will not be tolerated any further. The OP needs people's advice on how to fix his problem not to watch others argue. Consider this a warning, any further action by R2R staff will come with an infraction.

This is was my first post to this forum and first thread read and Im so entertained. This Vizzle guy is a riot. Vizzle could you please give me a run down of what exactly you do for 1-2 hours every day on your tank?

Yes today I physically moved baby star fish to areas of high visable copepod populations so I could watch them all eat for about an hour. Then spent about 5-10 mins of cleansing the glass, 15 taking apart the skimmer and cleaning it, as well as the rest of the day where at some point I will too off and spot feed for about 15-20 mins

Yesterday I fragged zoas for almost three hours, day before that cleaned powerheads and pumps, day before the took apart lights and cleaned relfectors.

You guys are really tripping me out that you can't think of things to do with your fish tanks. So I am 100% done posting in this particular thread as we were requested too by the admins

Sorry I didn't know admins asked you to stop posting. You are definitely one of the most egotistical people I've "met" on any forum and I think your replies are comical and I enjoy reading them.

they asked us all to stop posting off topic here in this thread, not just me.

I see that now. I apologize for posting further. Also to Trebor, sorry about the ATO incident and sorry about getting this tread so off topic. Things happen which are beyond our control.
