Most likely species is Octopus joubini, or Atlantic Pygmy Octopus.

Any suggestions as to how to get him out or deal with him? Anyone with similar experiences? I have several decorator crabs that I really do not want to lose.

You could try a damsel fish trap with some food in it.

Just be glad it is a joubini - there was a story circulating years ago about a person who got a blue ring octopus as a hitchhiker!

I got a dwarf octopus as a hitchhiker in my order of Tampa Bay Live rocks ( along with a fleshy limpet, urchins, pistol shrimp, a brittle sea star, and assorted crabs. I only see the little guy when i check the tank in the middle of the night ( letting the puppy out to use the bathroom). Since they only live 6-8 month, I just figure he can dine on some of the crabs and snails i have added. I always catch him on the same side of the tank so i am guessing he lives somewhere on that side.

Are you near Seattle? I’ll buy him off you

Put some crushed snails in a Coke bottle and wait. You will get him!

Where in Ohio are you? I’m in Ohio and I’d definitely take him

You seen the video of the idiots handling the blue ringed octopus?

when we were kids we used to play in rock pools not knowing they were everywhere.
