Update on me and some info about me

Don't have the tank yet I'm getting it in august. Also I had a freshwater tank before but all the fish died because I was stupid. But I'm gonna get a tank with a pictus catfish and some upside down catfish

I'm getting freshwater this year and then next year I'll get saltwater

His name is Melvin he sleeps in a crate with a bed that he loves until he has to go for a walk. He isn't potty trained my family never learned how but it's fine he's usually out of his crate except when no one is watching him or we have to go somewhere. So as you all know I'm getting a tank in august which I'm probably gonna do freshwater. I have done a freshwater tank in the past but all the fish died and my parents sold the tank I'm gonna do it right this time! I have reasons I'm not doing saltwater which I will tell you. If you guys can counter these reasons than maybe I'll reconsider saltwater.

Reason #1. Cost

Saltwater requires a lot more equipment than freshwater in my opinion and it's very costly. You need a sump, pipes, filter socks, protein skimmer, reactor, refugum, powerheads, return pumps, overflow units, special test kits for metals and nitrogen cycle, RODI unit, reef ready tank, salt, sand, live rock, and much more. Fre ash water is just decorations, heater, good filter, nitrogen cycle, drinking water(not tap), test kit, lights, water changes, and some other stuff. But compare the price. My parents are paying for this and I don't want to overwhelm them with cost.


Reason #2. Tank size.

Long story short you need a big tank because small tanks have changing water parameters and big tank is a lot of money.


Reason #3. Coral.
Corals aren't very hardy and can be sensitive to water conditions.


Reason #4 this is my first tank that I will be doing right.
My old tanks went wrong because we didn't know about acclimation, cycling and Ammonia we just put the fish in. Freshwater fish are usually more hardy than saltwater and I don't want fish to die cause than I'd hate myself.

If anyone has solutions to these problems the biggest being cost tell me and I'll respond.

If I'm being honest I would love to do saltwater but the equipment Is so expensive and if anyone have a solution to getting a big saltwater tank with out a need for an overflow box or sump or return pump or reactor and all that other complicated equipment I would love that! But if not I will just do freshwater but I honestly love saltwater more but if I can't cut down cost I'll settle for freshwater.
