Tang: (n) a vegetarian fish of the surgeonfish family, named aptly do to their scalpel like scale on their tail

Coral: (n) a plant like fleshy sea animal that uses photosynthesis or consumption of food from the water column
To the unenthusiast: jewelry or a color

Reef safe: (n) describes the level of compatibility within the reef aquarium.
To the unenthusiast: a place to safely lock away your Christmas Reef during the off season

Fruit loops: (n) a colorful species of zoanthid.
To the nonenthusiast: cereal associated with toucans that changes the color of your milk

Candy cane: (n) an Lps coral that resembles delicious candy
To the unenthusiast: real candy!

Pagoda: (n) a bowl shaped Lps coral
To the no enthusiast: a tiered tower

Duncan's coral: (n) a branching Lps with fat pink and green polyps

As far as I'm concerned, this is a hobby for all of us and even a job for some. If reefing or even just dabbling in fish...all of the data, maintenance, faux Latin, and words like responsibility...it can start to get cucumbersome and even make you loose your initial spark.

With awesome vocabulary references we can all have a little laugh, even during the hard stuff.

Next time you are doing a hard task just think about what someone else would think you are doing because of their unfamiliarity with the vocabulary.

G-unit to one person is a rap group while others would assume its an algebra term. Same applies here!

Kelvin: (n) a unit of measurement involving temperature, in reefing applications it refers to the color temperature of any given light bulb.

Zoo - A place for animals.

Zoa - Slang for zoanthid.

Zoanthid - Not affiliated with "Zoo", unless "Zoas" are kept in a "Zoo".
 
Polyp envy- when your spouse complains that you stare at the tank more than them.

Fiji: (n) a place in the tropics where a substantial number of life forms are cultivated, aquacultured, and globally dispersed

Live Rock - (n) rocks used in aquariums that is teaming with living organisms such as algae, beneficial microscopic bacteria, and copapods. Not when you see rock band perform in person.

Dead Rock - (n) the opposite of live rock, it's a rock devoid of any life. Not disco music.

Aggressive Tank - (n) an aquarium populated with aggressive fish, sharks, and/or eels. Not a charging heavily armored and weaponized vehicle.

Holy Grail - (adj) the most highly sought after, usually very rare, ultimate, coral or fish. Not a cup that Indiana Jones is searching for.

Leather - (n) a type of soft coral with a leathery textured skin. Not a dried cow's hide.

Acan - (n) short for acanthrastrea, a type of LPS coral. Not a singular cyclindrical metal container used to hold beverages.

Maxima - (n) a type of giant clam. Not a car model made by Nissan

Designer Clownfish - (n) a captive bred clownfish specifically bred for a certain trait. It's not Nemo working in the fashion industry.
