@Sarah24 no kissing the fish

Hello,

Oh we are not suppose to kiss our fish, maybe that’s why they don’t have ick (possibly lol) or could be the reason I have mono, it’s the human version of ick lol.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Just noticed weird abrasions on my arms all the way up to my shoulders. These cuts would take 10x longer to heal than what my body’s heal time usually is. Like these marks would take 4 months to heal. I was concerned it had something to do with a pre existing injury I have. In 2013 I was teaching a friend how to ride quads, I was on the back, and it flipped. Sharp metal part that your feet rest on chopped my whole calf off in one nasty rip. Had to get helicoptered 3 hours away.. 15 days in the hospital.. 7 surgeries.. 2 skin grafts.. a million dollars later(thank you medical insurance).. and woo I can walk again. But my immune system has been a little compromised since. It takes me noticeably longer to heal and get better from illnesses now. So yea I didn’t question these marks on my arms to much. Until, thank you reef2reef, some one was freaking out about palytoxin as per usual but it included a beneficial link to other common marine illnesses aquarists can get. The pictures looked exactly like what I had/have. Scheduled a doc appointment, she had no idea what I was talking about, but they ordered a blood test, bingo, marine tb.

I’m not sure when I got it, I used to work in a public aquarium as an aquarist but that was years ago.
I do a little tank maintenance gig here in the bay as a side hustle, so I could of got it from anywhere.
Hopefully it’s not in my tanks. My fish seem fine, I haven’t lost any besides jumpers.

But yea other than the rash/abrasions on my arms going up to my shoulders there’s not really any bad symptoms. Apparently it’s a tough one to beat so she put me on 2 antibiotics just in case lol. Cipro and Kefflex.

I imagine it’s much more common than we think in our hobby if I got it, I’m fairly new compared to some of these old heads. I’m pretty sure it goes undiagnosed alot.

Wow, that's quite a long road.

Glad you are up and walking!

So, you are now in QT? :-) I hope the hospital gives you time to recuperate. I still think working 24 hour shifts is insane for someone that does what you do, although I assume it has been done that way for many, many years. Just doesn't seem right.

Hello,

Lol yeah I’m kinda banned from work right now :). They lol said I couldn’t use sick time (that’s what it’s for) and have to use my comp time. Oh well at least I’m still paid for work and can catch up. I have to be on my meds for a week min, then test again then possibly can go back. However the side effects can or will last s month or two or longer.

I found this morning that my millipora decided to come back and show its polyps. It has not colored up yet, but they were out in full this morning. It’s tempting to go do things etc but (I really shouldn’t), the dr I should stay home for min of a week for my safety as others. Unless i really need something then I can use a hazemat suit lol.

Saved it to my favorites lol. Yea it was a wild time, nothing seems to major since that haha.

Thank you palytoxin person for helping me find this mystery out!

Hello,

Wow your lucky to be alive my friend, I’m surprised you didn’t have a level 3 bleed out (aka need a blood transfusion). Really glad your able to walk again and, I didn’t follow really what happened or understand what you meant. I definitely wouldn’t do that again and or avoid it lol.
How does it and or does it affect you now?

Yea I was close to needing a blood transfusion. I was anemic for 3 months after I got out of the hospital so maybe they should have haha. When it happened my friends were freaking out and basically froze up. I ended up taking my shirt off and tying my own tourniquet, called 911, all that. Accidents happen, I don’t blame my friend to much. I still visit him up in Tahoe a few times a year when I go snowboarding.
I have zero feeling in my right leg now, but my right foot is extra sensitive, my Achilles’ tendon is super tight, so flexibility isn’t great. My “new” calf is also bigger than my left,so that’s weird, I still wear normal pants and stuff lol, my calf is just a little bigger. I get by though.
After the 4th surgery/debriment it was still infected, they were going to throw in the towel and amputate. Thankfully they didn’t, because on the 5th surgery it was looking better. The 6th and 7th were huge skin grafts from my thigh, that wasn’t as bad. But being under anesthesia 7 times in 2 weeks is not fun, I don’t recommend it lol.
So I’m mainly just happy I can walk, run, hike, surf, all the things I love to do in nature.

Not really any lessons learned that I would change per say, but it made me a stronger person and much more humble.

How are you feeling today?

Amazing that you even lived to tell about it. Quick thinking on your part and I hope it was a lesson for your friends to be more helpful. Glad the doctors were able to save your leg and that you still have use of it.

Same here! I was very fortunate I had the doctor I had. I got randomly assigned to one of the best orthopedic surgeons in the country who happened to be on call that day. My plastic surgeon was great to.

Sarah, how you doing, how’s the fish, let’s see a FTS, it’s been ages.

Hello,

I feel horrible to be honest so I have slept a lot because I have had these crazy insane migraines all day today. So one of the things that helps is (like doing brain breaks) no tv or phone etc nothing bright). Which is helping but not fond of the constant pressure on my forehead. I was given meds to take but trying not to as best as I can (for reasons).

I can do a full tank shot, it took me a moment to figure out what that even meant. Then once I figured it out, I felt really kinda dumb lol. I will also include a pic of the millipora that finally decided to be happy again. (May have the name wrong but it’s the sps with all the really long polpys looks like it’s hairy lol). I also have to do either really far away or two pics since my tank won’t fit in one screen shot
