Hello,

So not much of an update on my 400, just been crazy busy with work. However was curious as to what level of nitrates is good for a mixed reef. I have been told 10-15ppm but others have said not more than 2. From as much research as I have done, there is so much controversy about it, who knows what to believe. If I do water changes every two weeks I average about 2ppm and if I go 6 weeks then I average between 5-15ppm. What’s the thought process on this, and as terrible as this sounds I have a very long awaited date with my pillow and blanket. We are gonna see the whole movie series sleep:).

the word mixed makes it hard to say for sure. To control algae keeping the system nutrient lean is dependent on your System. I have seen tanks with levels above 50 and seem to be doing ok (Prob not good in long term)
Stability is the most important thing.. If you have to struggle and throw other things out of harmony chasing a Number your causing more harm then good..
So yes my post is as confusing as everything else..

Short Version Do not chase numbers. Pay as much attention at how things look as well as test results, Its More about stability.. If course keeping them lower . i say 5-15 range for most tanks is acceptable.

Good Luck

Some food for though...

I think nutrient levels are only part of the question. For example, if your Nitrates and PO4 are high, it is different if you run Alkalinity at 7 dKH and have low PAR, as compared to 11 dKH and high PAR. I know you have experience in this, but often feel newer reefers look for a magic number that works for every unique system.

Totally true.. Each tank has its own unique ecosystem There is not a one number fits all situation

I saw you use orbit marine pro lighting on your tank. I do also but I'm looking to upgrade to a larger tank and I'm curious how many fixtures do you have on your tank and what are your tank dimensions? Thanks

Hello,

Do you have the orginal orbit marine pro (60 degree lens) or the new ic loop orbit pro? I have the 60 degree ones which also use the dual ramp timer and are substantially more powerful. My tank is 72 long by 34 tall and 24 wide. I have always used two and had amazing results. I have since switched to three. I’m probably going to go back to two of them. It’s just way to much light for my sandy bed corals. The sps just adore it, but running the mixed reef makes it hard. I normally ran on preset 3 but now I’m on preset 4 which is acclimation and I have turned the brights down to 40%. The blues are at 100 still. I’m finding most corals like this except one or two, so I am pretty close.

Hello,

Sorry it’s been a few days, been just swamped with work and it seems like I forget which day or month I’m in. But was given not so great news from work. They want to transfer me to a different hospital this fall. Which makes it hard since I just bought my home and my tank etc. I’m light of this I have definitely said I don’t want to go. Guess we will see what happens. Worse case their are other hospitals, I just don’t wanna uproot everything so far.

But still working on my tank and critters and will update hopefully later today.

Ugh! Drama always finds a way.

Hello,

I’m still an intern so they can do what ever they want and plus it’s Idaho. So since I’m in my first year residency they can move me from what they said. But as a normal one they don’t move them much unless it’s their choice. We will see what happens. I don’t see it has drama, I just see it as them throwing a huge golf club at me. FORE

Hello,

So I’m the type of person who kinda panicks usually on small things, but major major things I’m like let’s go lol. After voicing my concern to the director, and my boss, they at least agreed with me that this would not be ideal for me. They had no idea that I lived in my own house etc (why would I tell them anyway except now) They initially wanted me to do a year somewhere else for my residency for experience. Yet, I have already filled those requirements so I guess doing all this sooner saved me. So I’m not out of the woods lol yet (yes they are still looking for the 9 iron they threw at me). But, they told me it can be changed and not set in stone yay.

I guess they figure most 25 year olds don't already own a home with a three car garage right out of school. Maybe they thought it was no big deal to shuffle you around. I hope they do decide to keep you there. You still haven't completely gotten over the pee in the sump fiasco. :-)

Moving might stink, but it might mean she gets to put her new tank next to a bathroom. That may reduce "unpleasant odors" when the nephews visit in the future! ;)

Glad you have a better chance of staying put!
Most 25 year olds are years behind you.
You are doing awesome!

Moving for the service got old. Only good thing was it forced me to clean house and get rid of junk every few years!

Lol, have you figured out you could add a half bath addition downstairs for the cost of your new tank?

Hello

Gosh lol I feel so loved lol, even if I put a bathroom downstairs, I’ll waste 20,000 because everyone will just go up stairs. In all honesty they had no idea, I owned a home etc, when I explained why this would be devastating to me, they assumed I lived in the housing provided. Oops. Not me, roommates drive me crazy.

Plus it would be total night mare moving two tanks that are huge. I would probably be brain fried afterwards. There is zero intention of breaking down my 240 unless it’s leaking or something extremely major happens.

But hey my lights should be here any day and that should be super fun :).
