Urgh seriously.

Hello,

So update time and some cool new things to show off :). First off my new Maximus clam came in and looks ohhhh so amazing and it’s doing great so far after three days. Secondly, my naso tang decided to be social again. Now I’m at odds of why she went into hiding, I had music loud or fish being mean. But I can say that green and brown seaweed will always get them out lol. As soon as that hit the water she was there in a flash and took half on her own. She also chased off some of the chromies when they came to close. But now she does her normal thing and no changes or anything. This will baffle me till I can find a logical solution, but it also means if it was because of me watching the Disney movie Tangled kinda loud, then I won’t ever do that again. My tank comes first and always try and take care of them.

I also made quite a show at my lfs this Sunday. I fragged my pink bxxbies and Miami hurricane and monster bxxbies and after burner. I did 8 large frags of each because they were getting so large. The lfs could not get them on plugs fast enough and I ended up having quite a large store credit. Plus I have a list of people who want to be next, but none of them lasted the day :). What was more amazing was people couldn’t believe my corals were grown from my lights. I have four huge volleyball size birdsnest I need to just break off and take down there. But a first I had two couples come by to see what they would like since I ran out of the others. Needless to say, they wanted one of everything and even offered to put place money down (which I won’t) they were not well off so they did get some for free. But for example my frags of the afterburner were about 3 inches long by 3/4 of an inch. They were pretty large pieces and on the pink bxxbies one frag had 7 to 9 eyes so good size:).

It’s nice to see now that my tank is starting to kinda pay for itself when I want to have more variety of corals etc. would never charge a lot etc but I’d prefer to just trade for other corals I don’t have. So with that said I am now trying to work with two of the lfs and aquarium to maybe start a frag swap in Boise which would ( be a first :) :)

Hello @Sarah24! I see I missed a bunch of posts. o_O Asleep at the wheel, I am. ;Yawn I'm going to have to buy some of your zoa frags and see if I can get you to ship them to me - provided I ever finish my tank. :( Glad everything is going good in your reef.

How are you feeling these days? Hopefully you are doing better.

Hello,

Super nice to see you again and that’s very kind of you. Of course, friends don’t charge friends for coral, I’ll just send you a rock with a bunch on it. Let me know when your ready and I will send it to you. I kinda have to move away from softies, my water is too clean. They still do very well but it also depends on which ones they are. My Red and blue ones do awesome, other neat ones not so much it’s weird.

Hello;

Sorry it seems every time I try and catch my thread up life happens and yeah so many apologies. So this week has been interesting in which I trimmed and made some changes on accident.

First, I discovered a new coral (not a new species but I didn’t know I had till I started moving things) but have no clue what it is but it is something that plates like mystic sunrise or meteror shower etc but it’s yelloe and orange. So I became ocd again and hair alage just bugs me.

So I started in the little spot with a pediatrician size tooth brush and did away with more. I then found a rock on the back wall covered in it. How I missed this means I don’t just need glasses but very very very very thick glasses. It did have some birdsnest growing on it, and now I broke off what I could and scrubbed the rock, but it was loaded. It went in a bucket with salt water to give away or exchange.

Now I have had this rock behind another large birdsnest which also had some green zoas. Now I love them but the birdsnest took over: well I wanted to see them again and not only did I find another rock ten times worse with hair algae lol but also this neat coral on it. Needless to say I couldn’t save all of it, but I took a hammer and cutter and cut to small pieces off and removed the rock from the system.

Now that I have checked every single rock I have pretty much eradicated the hair alage which is a positive. Why it didn’t spread faster is beyond me. It may be because the rocks sat in the far back and they only touched a very little section of other rocks. But just goes to show if given a chance that stuff will grow. The next step is painfully clean all my wave makers.

I also almost destroyed my own reef because when I went to move my rock I dropped it. Not did I just drop it but on top of my sps. Luckily the birdsnest are huge because they broke the fall and made the rock miss all my expensive corals. It did land on my afterburner chalice, we will see about that one. But yeah was going to take pics but forgot, however tomorrow I will have them and hopefully figure out what coral has been growing in the back of my tank corner that i didn’t even see and certain I didn’t buy.

Where is inspector gadget when you need him the most.

Hello,

Today has been a little over whelming but I promise to post pics I haven’t forgotten. The new clam that is actually quite a bit larger than my old one has definitely this time mounted to the rock he is on. I’m curious as to why my old clam never attached?

In tune of changing topics lol, does anyone have those moments when you get home, and you don’t wanna do anything? Even things you love to do? Such as like I love doing things with my tank. Some days I literally put it off because maybe I’m becoming lazy. Yes I put in 100 plus hours a week st work, but (house is always clean) but other things I’m just like meh it can wait. My tank isn’t one of them however some have fallen to that. Is this what happens when you age :(

I hear you on that. I’m always down to dose something but when it comes time to clean powerheads or something similar, I easily can put that off for months.

No one that works 100 hours a week could ever be considered “lazy.” Fatigued? Yes. You need time to unwind and relax away from work. I know as I get older, I just don’t have the energy anymore to do much else when I get home from work. A short nap is usually what happens, because I am drained from the events of the day. I used to love Daylight Savings Time, because I could get things done around the house when I got home. Now, in my mid sixties, not so much. Take down time for yourself to just relax and don’t feel guilty when you do.

Hello

As promised I would post pics of my new clam that’s doing exceptionally well and nice full mantle and my lights are still in acclimation. Tomorrow I will turn the power up a little more for another week and then again for two more weeks. The lights are running about 15% lower than normal, but other corals don’t seem to mind and softies and lps (definitely like it more). So will try and find a happy medium. Sps still doing great, and some of the blues and purples are really starting to show and come out (aka purple stag horn and some others). The ice dragon blues are starting to come out more as well.

Also in the pics I cut a square and another smaller piece off a rock I gave back to the lfs. It had a bunch of zoas on it but was surprised by it also covered in hair alage. So sad to say the one section of zoas had to go. But I found this chalice growing on the back side and was facing the back plane of glass. No idea what it is any guesses? It’s greenish yellow with red dots :)

Here is also a pic of the birds nest growing out of control. The top one is maybe 18 inches long and about 10 inches from the back of the tank and is casting huge shadows. So pretty but need suggestions on what to do. I’m going to probably cut it in half and either give or trade the other piece away. I have two others of the same one that are huge also but more like large grapefruit size

Looking great Sarah!

Amazing that your tank is doing so well despite all the hours you work. You are right to be proud of your system!

Hello,

Aw thanks and it’s because I keep things fairly simplistic in my tank. Yet as I say this I spend about 45 min a day on it and would be better if I did more. Sometimes hard to find the energy to do the other stuff. Here is a pic of that coral that I had no idea existed till I moved the rock out of the tank. I couldn’t save all of it but cut two small pieces of it off. I have no idea what it is but would love to know.

Everything looks happy and healthy. I don't know how you do it with all that you have going on. That new clam looks awesome! Hope you have it for a long time.

Hello,

I’m very excited, he actually attached to the rock this time. My other one was in my tank for almost a year and a half and never once attached. So this is definitely a good sign and love the deep blue it has. I don’t know how I do it but as soon as I know I’ll share my secret.

It still needs work and some new additions but it’s coming nicely for being 18 months old. It’s growing like a normal child lol.

Hello,

I’m curious once someone tank is set up and thriving,
How many people want to keep changing it, or leave it be? Does one ever have those moments where your like gosh I really wanna change this part and should have the first time?

Like an example would be I hate my sump tank, yet it works but if I move or ever have to break this tank down oh it’s so history. Yet I love the rock scape so I generally don’t mess with it but I purchased some plate rock and had fun with it in a 300 empty tank st my lfs. Sad to say I like it almost better than I do mine own. However changing mine to that probably won’t work to well. They were fresh out of ideas and so as my niece and nephews browsed the store I had play time :). I should have bought those specific rocks (possibky still can), but just like how simple it was and endless possibilities for coral.

Really liked that there where no big over flows they where all on top of the tank. However it would be difficult to mount my marine pros on a rimless tank like this. But definitely has some wheels turning.

Miss Sarah , I would think I lot of us want to change this or move that. I know I do !
May I ask , Do You have an LFS near by or do You order these really nice corals You have .
The tank You Show has a very nice scape. I understand the over flows can't handle a lot of water.

I think we all change things over time. For example, I change things as corals start to grow out, or if I get pests like aiptasia I remove the whole rock rather than spend time and effort battling them. I also change things as I learn more, or as my tastes change.

Hello,

Yes we have three lfs in Boise or meridian per say. Most of my corals probably 75% are from the lfs and no name. The others are ones that are well known and I ordered online (2 times) from others people on the R2R forum who were selling them. As much as I do like some of them, it’s hard for me to pay 100 dollars or normally like 225 etc for a frag pack that’s maybe 5-8 frags that are an inch or smaller. I have bought colonies of some sps corals for 55 there. Yes who knows what it is or fancy name but still really pretty purple and blue. There is one shop that does order in all the fancy stuff, however they are not exactly cheap or worse trustworthy. Most of the time (example my new Maximus clam (for a 2 inch there they want 179 for anything over 3 inches it’s 299). Yet the place I bought my clam that is a good five inches plus give or take, was only 99.00 it has amazing colors just like the other ones. What’s really odd is there are only a few places the lfs shops can order from. In addition two of them work with the aquarium to buy other sps corals etc from a vendor that’s only set up for aquariums etc. It’s odd yet neat because for example if he aquariums tanks crash most of the corals have been fragged and at the lfs to be fragged again. Same with the lfs they frag theirs just in case something like that happens (and has happened a lot). I would estimate a good 85% of the people who live or have tanks in Boise, get most of their stuff from lfs. However none of them are anything like on the east coast or large metro cities. There are no frag swaps (which I hope changes or to change).

I hate aptasia I have chalked like 7 of them like a dozen times and they pop back out like a dandelion. I had one rock and I called it aptasia island :). I had sooo many on that rock I took it out actually. But left it in a bucket with saltwater no light, flow nothing and they still lived, till I dumped like a gallon of bleach in there :). But I still have like 8 that always come back in the same place after 2 months. So annoying little weeds.

@Bronc lol yes I’m going through that now as my corals are starting to shade each other. I’m trying to not allow any of them to touch but it’s really hard getting in there and not accidentally breaking something. Corals are definitely not very fond of humans :).
