those are NitrItes.. not NitrAtes. nirites are the precurser to nitrates.

LOL... sorry dude. Hannah does make a Nitrate reader. its $200. if you had one I was gonna ask to borrow it.

OK, sorry for the thread Hijack.
For shots and giggles, I tested some newly mixed water with the Kent salt I bought and it came out 0.00 Po4 on my Hannah checker. Was a bit disappointed that the mixing instructions came to 33ppt salinity as I prefer 35. I didnt check my Calcium or alk with it though.

I just switched from instant ocean to the redsea salt, was told it was a better salt. I've done a few water changes with it and have been having a hair algae problem since I switched over. I don't have a phosphate tester. I'll try it until my bucket runs out and then might go back to the reef crystals.
Both red sea as well as instant ocean are great salts...there are literally hundreds of successful tanks using both salt brands. Both brands have had bad batches, and both brands have their fanboys. There are other great salt mixes out there as well. The key is to picking a salt you like and sticking with it, your maintenance routine will be built around maintaining your tank with that salt mix.

0.00 on the Hana Checker and Red Sea salt this evening. It mixed for about 3 hours before I tested.

I'm starting to gather its something on my end. Once I get more reagent in I will look into finding the source. I'm guessing either it's the duce gallon jugs used for storing the water although, they're only in them one week at most.

Could be the batch of salt as well... I know I had a reading of 0.08 or higher once before. But, that was a different batch of Red Sea...
And I've also since cleaned my mixing container with vinegar.

Pretty sure I found the source of the phosphates.
Here is a test from this morning from one of my five gallon holding containers (they're a few years old, got then from AC,) I tested .13 with my Hanna from the holding container.
Now how to fix the problem. Not sure how. Any thoughts.

US Plastics sells food grade containers that should be free of phospate, I will check with them as i am having the same issues. Diatom blooms that are insane on my sandbed that get worse after a water change!!
