So, I was told that using any aerosauls or burning candles or anything that emits a smell or some type of chemical in the air will kill your tank. The issue is my wife is getting really tired of not being able to use any of these and I’m really curious if anyone has had any issues using aerosauls in their house and burning candles in the house. Of course having that stuff close to the tank will cause issues but if it’s on the other side of the room or maybe the next room over would it cause issues. What do y’all think? Trying to find a way to compromise with my wife with out hurting the tank.

Depends on the proximity and intensity.. I have 2 large-ish tanks in the front part of my house and my wife lives to burn candles... And spray that smelly canned stuff.. no issues to date, BUT... she also knows to give the tanks a wide berth..
Long winded "with caution".....

Candles im not sure.. but air sprays... yes !!!.. My mom loves smelly crap and one day sprayed the downstairs with glade air refreshner and within a few hours my fresh water tank has two angels fish die

Sorry about your fish!

I voted yes but wish it was a NO!

Most of the plug ins are pretty strong/bad for you.
But overdoing aerosols can OD quicker.
Better Half and I have gone a few rounds over these. Not for the fishes sake. For mine. Stupid things make me choke.
The less obnoxious scents aren't too bad but none of that stuff is a vitamin for you or your tank.

Boiling cinnamon or some herbs or sachets laying around are a lot healthier for you but they are a lot more work.

On the other hand, Happy wife, happy life. [emoji846]
We have the tanks in the back of the house and the stink machines in the front.

Lol, Part of the reason we do not have a HOB skimmer is that "cup" will never pass muster. I do a lot of water changes. [emoji849]

Fabreeze isn't bad and I like drier sheets FWIW. A single yankee candle is fine but I prefer to stay out of the store at the mall. [emoji6]

I gag too when I go near any of that stuff. The attraction to un-natural scents is hard for me to understand. Burning candles would be ok if they are non scented. Boiling herbs and spices on the stove is a better alternative. Throwing sprigs of stuff in the fireplace is ok too. Sprays are a bad thing for you the dog and the tank. Perhaps a dedicated candle and perfume room for her is in order. If you could swing it, have her open her own store in town. Plants with a lot of odor are another thing that might work instead. You might have to build her a green house for all those orchids

We burn candles perfectly fine. My wife love to use potpourri as well, which we have 3 on the same floor as our tank. Never been an issue

Candles and sensible use of air fresheners intended for residential use should be OK.
Obviously don't spray it in proximity of the tank, preferably in other rooms.
If a small amount of aerosol or air freshener kills life in your tank, maybe consider your own health and don't use those particular products at all in your home.

I'd stay away from febreeze, hair spray, and the like. Candles on the other hand I wouldn't worry about. Of course I am predisposed against febreeze because it gives me nose bleeds but generally you have a higher chance of them wafting into the tank. You could also cover your tank while your wife uses smelly stuff if it really worries you.

What about candle warmers like Scentsy that just melt smelly wax
I had issues with my skimmer going crazy for months until we ran out of wax... yea I don’t recommend it.
I’ve heard the most dangerous for our fish/coral is like cologne/perfume though, not sure if that’s true or hear say.

Good topic,

I would say yes, unless the room is well ventilated.

I use scented candles all the time on my dinning room table and my tank is in the dinning room. I've never worried about it. They just give off a weak smell they aren't mini chemical plants. If I thought it was going to wipe out my reefs I wouldn't use them for my own health, or the health of my cats. I also use wax melts in the house although not quite as close. You can probably use most things as long as you use some common sense. If spraying something in the same room is going to kill everything imagine what it is doing to you.

I burn candles in the same room as my tank. My living room is 25'×15' and the candle is on the other side of the 25'. Never any aerosol freshener, and never a plug-in freshener. Essential oil burners are a no go as well as the simple diffusers. So far, I've seen no ill effects from the candle.

We always try to avoid oil based products. Burning candles we never really got into but I have a very sensitive nose so I can only tolerate so much. Even our time in bath and body works has to be limited. If my wife sprays something its normally well away from the tank or a minuscule amount. Besides, with a toddler and a 7 month old, they "scent" the house on their own;Hilarious;Hilarious
