Using Dino X (Ultra Algea X) to solve GHA

I syphooned out as much as possible before taking the rock out, than sprayed, than scrubbed and finally rinsed with tank water. Not too concerned with the bits that remain as the filtration can easily deal with it.

Due ro the size of the structure a dip is not feasible. I would need to use a 20 gallon rubber maid container and in order to achieve a 1-10 ratio of peroxide-water would need some 8 litres of peroxide 8-}

This way I applied undiluted peroxide to the areas to be treated and used only 250ml, which is much more effective.

I did scrub it off as much as i could ans than rinsed with tank water. Due to the size of the structure a dip is not pratical. It would require a 20gallon rubber made tub and some 16L of peroxide to make it effective 8-}

Appologies for the quad post! Not sure what happened. The first time the app said that my post had been lost and when I did the second one it posted both, twice!

Based on what I have read I would not dose H2O2 in the tank. I considered removing the rocks to treat them outside but given these are three solid structures I see a couple of problems:

1- taking them out could significantly disturb the substrate and release a lot of nutrients into the water column

2- given these are 3 large structures, I am concerned that the H2O2 kills the bacterial filter of the treated structure and would have a too big impact in the overall biological filter potentially leading into an Ammonia spike that would kill of the fish.

Essentially I would wipe out 1/3 of the biofilter all of a sudden but the fish load would remain the same.

3- given the size of the structures I would need to treat them in 60 liter containers. So in order to make a 1:2 or even 1:4 dilution I would need 15 to 30 liters of H2O2 [emoji15]. Unfortunately where I live they do not sell it on bulk so I would need to go to the pharmacy and ask for 30 or 60 bottles of the stuff [emoji2].

Anyway, for now I will try this and see how it goes. If it does not work I may have to stock-up on H2O2 [emoji39].

I found this out a couple of years ago. Most of your drinking water companies/home water system companies have drums of 35% H2O2 food grade on hand. I buy mine from Culligan. $35 a gallon. This makes 10 gallons 3.5%. Be very careful at this concentration this is a dangerous chemical. You can buy online but shipping is outrageous because of the inherent dangers.

also if it helps, we have demonstrated no impact to tank bacteria using any overdose amnt (h202, not sure about affix)

Many tanks available for searching who dump it in at the rate of 1 ml per 10 gallons

gross overdose threads using both 35% caustic and the 3%. I myself use the uber dangerous 35% added directly to a pico reef to demo the controllability of the biofilter

The piece that I treated last week is amazing [emoji847]. I'll post some pictures shortly.

Now some pictures of the structure one week after treatment

And now, the center piece that I will treat tomorrow.

Just treated this structure. I'll post some pictures later today.

Here are the after pictures.

I don't understand why it still looks green did you spray it down

Yes, I did. But it is tons better than it looks in the pics. And if you look at the before shot the difference is quite dramatic. I'm very happy with the results. What's left is mostly getting white.

How long did you leave the stuff on for it usually takes five minutes to kill it

On average prob closer to 10min. Than I scrubbed with a brush and than rinsed.. Used a pipette to spray so might have missed a couple of spots. I'm not too concerned. I have zero nutrient intake (tank has been fallow for a month now) and will hit it with DinoX after all the structures are treated with peroxide, to make sure I get to the last spore. I will continue fish less for another 2 months so zero nutrient uptake (I know, except for the dying algae biomass).

I prefer this method as it is easier to make sure I do not spray the odd coral. But I might do a mix on the next structure. Use the pipette around the corals and spray the larger areas.

Ok, so after treating my rock structures with peroxide I am going to go on a second round of DinoX. The rocks are now very clean, but still I have some pockets of algae that I want to completely eradicate. I hope that now that I have much less algae it will be much more effective. I am also not feeding the tank as I do not have any any fish in. Dosed the first dose yesterday.

I've tried dino x, worked at getting rid of the algae but, came back anyways.

Ok, I have done two doses of Dino X. The only side effects seem to be that my elegance coral has shriveled up. It also did that the first time and it came back so not too worried.

Some pics of the spots I want to eradicate:
