What’s a decent UV sterilizer for a 70g tank.

Thoughts?

Thanks, Dave

I am using a Jebao PU-18 on my 400 DT and I have no complaints. It’s only 18w but my water is crystal clear and costs 60$.

it’s been running since January 18’

I put an AA-Aquarium Green Killing Machine 24W in my sump, it seems to get the job done.

This seems like a perfect one for me. I don’t want a inline unit because of space and I don’t want a hang on unit because I hear they leak a lot. Because this is 24w can this also kill parasites ?

Maybe single cell parasites or other microbes but I'm not sure about that. The ability of a UV system to sterilize vs clarify is a function of output and dwell time. To move towards sterilize you need to either increase the power of the UV (wattage) or decrease the flow through the device to increase the amount of time the water is exposed to the UV (dwell time). At least that's my understanding.

My total water volume is 105 based on my calculations. You think a 18w would work? Or do the 36? This will kill parasite right?

The 36 is pretty dang big, I bought it but had to return, as it didn’t fit in the stand.
I think you will do fine with an 18 but if you have the space do the 36. It may be overkill. I have over 400gallons overall on an 18

The 18w would fit perfect. I just hope its enough coverage to kill parasite. I see that you can get a 36w with a pump. If I hook my 18w to my return pump line will that be to fast of a flow?
Would it be best to run the 36w for example with the pump they sell on amazon? I can run the pump from my protein skimmer compartment and pour the water back to my return pump section? Or is that just silly? I guess I rather not have another pump running.

If you look at the picture I posted, I added a valve to the intake plumbing side of the UV. I have it dialed down so the flow is slower. I have it hooked up coming off of my return pump.

Just fyi, dont expect these small UVs to kill many parasites, you really need to oversize them to increase exposure time.

I can slow my return pump down with a controller, so I guess I could do that.

I never been a believer but I lost 6 fish to Ich last month. I think this will help for the future.

Ok, so if I get the 36w vs the 18w that would be the best bet?

I run an 80 watt at 300 GPH on my 200 Gallon system. I find that it is perfect and I have never had a problem.

I think it will still be too fast if it’s inline with your return, if you want it with your return pump I would do a manifold off of the return. That way your return pump can work at the normal setting and you can adjust the flow to the UV accordingly.

The bigger the better, but there’s a lot of speculation over UV and ich, and if it does anything to it.

What do you mean by manifold? Like have it split to the tank and UV? Some goes one way some goes the other?

Would it be ok if I got the 36w and hook a slow pump in my skimmer compartment of my Eshopp R-200 and run the return line to my return pump section "let the water pour into that section" Then my return pump will pump it back into the tank? I will be adding another pump but I could control it more.
