After all the wondering about ich, I'm now sure that my tang and RG have velvet...been in Cu since Friday, last night it bloomed big time...where to go now...I have fresh ParaGuard, could do fresh water bath...could you (HF or Meridith) give me the steps at this point...tang looks better than RG...waiting...thanks...

Based on this post I would probably recommend doing a fresh water dip ASAP. From the link above...

Chloroquine phosphate/copper - While all of the above will remove the vast majority of velvet on a fish, some will inevitably survive. Within 4 days the remaining trophonts will drop off the fish, then encyst, and usually 48-96 hours later (although it can take up to 20+ days depending upon the strain) release dinospores (free swimmers) seeking to reinfect fish. The presence of CP or copper at therapeutic levels kills the dinospores, effectively shielding your fish from reinfection. It is important to note that CP/copper does not eradicate any other stage of velvet, just dinospores. It has zero impact on the parasites on the fish; they must “weather the storm” until the trophonts fall off. This is why it is so important to do a freshwater dip and chemical bath beforehand, to reduce the number of parasites feeding on your fish’s body & gills. :(

cannot get either med locally...Sea Chem's ParaGuard they say is a "safe alternative to formalin"...has aldehydes and malachite green plus bacterial...don't have a lot of choice but tell me "no" if you feel strongly against it...awaiting your response...Ken

I would go ahead & use Paraguard for the bath component, if that's all you have. You don't have much time to lose if this is velvet.

Thanks...I talked to the SeaChem person...she agrees and feels copper is my most important component...I am ordering Metoplex and Focus for the 5 firefish in DT who show no symptoms...she feels that feeding thusly will not allow the parasite to live in the DT...all for a month...Thanks again...they got through the bath OK...

You need to get those fish out now. Do not treat the main tank. You are getting the only advice you should follow on here. There is absolutely nothing that will kill velvet in a reef tank..nothing. Ive had twice, others have it now and even more have dealt with it at some point. If you don't get them all out, it will live on and wreck havoc on your tank for no reason.

Yeah don't listen to sales people. They will tell you anything to make you buy their stuff. Listen to Humblefish only. He won't screw you over. Metro is an antibiotic and Focus is only a food binder. Those two items will not save your fish from velvet or ich! Get those fish out and into copper right away!

This is not true. I'm sorry hun, but they all need to come out and go through QT with copper. Follow humble's protocol that he posted above. Be sure not to leave any fish in the display.

Well, the Seachem person was at least half right. :p

X3 I can't stress this enough

Coincidentally, I have velvet with fish I just got a week ago. One died 3 days after I got them, should have suspected but the fish looked ok. Hit them with prazi last week. Saturday I noticed some twitching from my Foxface, avoiding light, loss appetite and today all three in QT have the telling dark patches. Started 15mg/gallon CP Saturday and doubled today with fresh water bath. May try the Paragard tomorrow. Prospects?

GET THE FISH OUT OF YOUR TANK HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY IT AS WELL AS EVERYBODY HERE BEFORE YOU LISTEN!
AND LET THE TANK GO FALLOW
GET THE MEDICINE THAT EVERYBODY HAS TOLD YOU AND NOT SUBSTITUTE YOU DIDNT CHECK EVERYWHERE CLOSE BY BECAUSE PETCO AND PETSMART HAVE THIS ON THE SHELF I WAS THERE GOING TO PICK IT UP FOR YOU AND MAKE A LONG EMERGENCY TRAVEL TO YOU , DID YOU LET ME KNOW? NO ITS 11:45 pm and I GOT TO FIND OUT HERE YOUR NOT EVEN FOLLOWING ANYBODYS ADVICE AHHHHHHHH!

He meant that he agrees with the original statement and that he's the third person to do so.
Thanks Meredith for the translation...guys my age don't know that stuff...the ff are going in to the QT...and the tank lays follow...6 Weeks?...anyhow the RG is just laying there but alive, the Kole is moving his fins and "sitting" up...I'll put them in slowly dripping a little copper in another little tank so they aren't given copper shock...Thanks again...tell me if I'm doing right...

If you are sure that it is velvet and not ich you should bring the copper dose up fairly quickly. Velvet kills too fast. The risk of copper shock is less than the threat from velvet.
Were you ever able to get a picture posted for a more positive identification?

bring the copper dose up fairly quickly

This means taking about 24 hours to bring the copper levels up. You don't want to do it all at once.
