Vibrant by UWC testing

I do want a 12 x 12 glossy of this shot

What is that eye thing

Day 21 6x doses @140ml total

Did put the 6th dose in last night.

So far opposite my prediction. More cyano it seems. But it looks like its ready to blow away. It would be really easy to siphon it out. Not touching it though. Seeing what will happen.

The rocks do look different to me. I started noticing it I think Friday. Hard to explain and it's not getting it in pictures well at all. Best way to explain it is it looks clean.

Pictures from last night.

Day 22 6x doses @ 140ml total

Cyano does look like it got blown back a bit. And the glass tonight looks the best it has recently. There's still some film algae growth but not nearly as much. I still cleaned it off tonight.

I've stopped using Vibrant. I'm convinced that it is causing an unbalance that is making my cyano worse and hurting my coral. I have no idea what the problem is, but while my hair algae has gotten much better, and I almost never have to clean my glass, my tank is suffering. I have no PE, and have lost a few plating corals entirely, probably from being smothered by cyano.

I'd love to see if your testing can show why.

I can definitely see something is changing and so far cyano is coming out as the winner. But I'll stick this out for a while.

Did you do any siphoning or blow of it off? Change anything with nutrient exports? How many doses and how long did you try it?

My corals all look normal along with my bubble tips. Cyano has stuck to the sand and bottom of the rocks.

And I did find one of my 3 urchins last night. I'm sure the others are in there somewhere.

I just noticed in the algae above the gyre pump pic there seems to be a bit of cyano there growing out possibly.

One thing that's normally recommended for cyano is to increase flow. That gyre with cyano right on top if it now runs at 100% 24/7. Thats supposedly around 5000gph.

I have another gyre that runs at 100% 24/7 setup vertically and alternates direction with the lunar cycle 4 times a day like a tide (some fun apex programming and I have a thread for that too ;) ). So, say another 2500gph. Which creates an awesome undertow along the back of the tank part of the time and the front of the tank part of the time.

My return pump works with that horizontal gyre pump pushing across the top at about 1400gph.

I think I'm good with flow. lol

My zoas are doing great as is my bta. My pipe organ keeps getting smothered with cyano and some plating SPS's have been taken out.

I'm sure I need to make some husbandry changes, just not sure what. So, I'm going back to the basics.

And I have seen major cyano growth in very high flow areas in my tank. Like 6" away from an MP40 running at 60%.

I had cyano growing on a high flow area of my tank not that far infront of my gyre when it receives 100% power and it never blew off. I started dosing vibrant last week for cyano, at the weekend I did syphon it all up.

My cyano started when I had a nutrient spike after aquascaping my tank and due to corals and anemones I did not want to do a 3 day blackout, all my nutrients are low so I assumed it was feeding off light.

people who have cyano growing since using vibrant is it not because an increase of nutrients from the other algaes dieing off?

I'm sure that is exactly what causes the bloom. Just not sure the bloom isn't a worse problem than the algae.

Observation of the product needs to be looked at directly.

Vibrant is just organic carbon dosing plus bacteria. The added organics can easily fuel cyano growth.

The idea is presumably that the added bacteria out-compete the cyanobacteria. If for some reason they do not (like there is a lot of cyano to begin with of a species that can consume the added organics), then it might make the problem worse.

With vibrant having a ph of 7.4 what organic carbon source would come to mind?

Ok so I can not come up to the conclusion that this is a carbon source.
8 oz bottle contains
.04 oz of vinegar
.08 oz aspartic acid
dosed 1@10 every 7 days
Eucalyptus oil is present
PH value of 7.4
0 alcohol content
Still working with this..

How do you know Eucalyptus oil is present and how would it benefit the tank?

that is a dead giveaway when first opened :)
I can not go into the purpose I just state my findings.
SG of 1.037.. ? Sodium
Time to reduce this :)

@Randy Holmes-Farley, is it also possible that cyano can be jump started by the die off of algae that results from dosing Vibrant? Or do you think a bad case after dosing Vibrant is only a result of what you said.....an inability of the Vibrant bacteria to out compete the cyano?
