vic's 225 gallon inwall build thread

Wow, you have some fun times ahead. This is exciting, and I cant wait to see this tank setup and running.

What do you plan on using for filtration? I know that you mentioned going old school, but was wondering if you would be incorporating some of the new age probiotic meathods.

Concerning the 400lbs of sand, it is going to take a while to wash that out. I washed my sand bucket by bucket. Why are you adding so much sand? I think that I have no more than 70-80lbs of sand in my setup and couldnt see myself adding anymore.

Keep up the great work. If you need anything, just let me know. ;)

Thanks,

Sonny

hey sonny
thanks for the reply
i follow your thread daily as you inspired me to setup this tank.
well im kinda going old school i guess, just not doing the fancy gadgets, anymore.
i used to have a profulux controller, when i first got it i thought i would start my car with it,but then found that i only controlled my light cycle, after a few years i sold it ,went to canadian tire and purchesed a couple digital timers ,only cost me 30 bux and did the same thing.
i have been using a calcium reactor for 11 years on my present tank without a controller, and often thought about a controller, but never purchased one for the calcium reactor.
so i will be using the same calcium reactor, monitor my ph and alkalinity and calcium levels.
in 2007 i tried prodibio and really liked the results so i will use it on my 225.
i also dose kalkwasser via a kalk reactor.
if i need to dose any liquids it will be warnermarin products ive been using them for years and will continue as there productline is super.
i dose a little iodine from time to time, use quality salt.
i tested biopellets last year and didnt like the results with red slime,i figure my system was to pure,i had no phosphates and no nitrates, prodibio and microb-lift fixed that algae problem
nothing special on the filtration, basically water circulation through a sump.
ive tried mangroves in the past and will use them again.last mangroves i grew were 3ft tall,i grew them in miracle mud, ended up giving them away, aparently there still alive.
as per the sand 400 lbs seems like alot but acording to the math that was done it will give me a 4" sandbed.im a believer in sandbeds.
ive also tried a plenum system in a 55 gal ,i think for 5 or 6 years, worked great but figured it was to much work to put into a 82 gallon,im lazy.

i will be cycling this tank the method i was taught 20 yrs ago.i used a 1-2 lb lobster for 6 weeks fed it shrimp it gave me a very good bacteria.
i guess my fanciest gadget would be my osmalator water top up.it keeps my salinty levels constant.works very well.

back to the sand i think i will only give it one rinse as i was told not to rinse it at all as the fine particles are beneficial.i do believe this.i will judst rinse sand so when it goes into tank theres no dust airborn.
ill be using seafloor.
well i guess i did get a new toy,its a flow meter tolalizer,i think this will be a very useful tool for waterchanges, as it will tell me how much water im removed and replaced instead of drawing lines and hoping i didnt takeout to much water.

i do presently feed only dry food as you have indicated in your thread and have achieved good results with this method as well.
im presently toying with the idea of using dry rock on a 70:30 ratio
love to get some of your sps here in mississauga someday

thanks
vic
