How high is your light of the water surface and how deep is your tank ?Hey guys,
I’m still running these 15% blue 1% white. I’m getting decent growth on my zoas. I have a few other corals also but they haven’t been in long enough to record any growth. My question is:
If I’m noticing results is it wise to start ramping up? Seems like there’s such a fine line from where coral is thriving and where they are not so happy. Is it a ramp up until I notice negative results, then back down kind of process? Or is it wise to practice the old “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”? Here’s a picture of my yellow tip Acro that’s only been in my tank for 5 days. Polyp extension has improved the last few days but way too soon to expect any growth...
I’m going to try and get on the list to use the PAR meter available by my local club but not sure when that’s going to be.

Firstly how old is your tank? How long have you had the zoas?I have a 28 length by 12 wide by 16 deep with roughly 2 inch sand. Light is 9 inch of water level set at blues 50 8.00am to 8pm white at 10 from 9.30am to 6.30pm. My zoa is struggling it seems and my grass is not away out. Picture posted. Any advise. I also have this strange clear like grass algae. I'm new to the reef world. Go easy
Alk is at 8, calcium is high trying to get it down from 500, nit is pretty much 0, temp ranges from 74.4 to 76 due to lights being on, salinity I'm unsure as it's from the reef shop I use. I bought the dry rock from there and cured it for two weeks in three baths of RODI water before it went in the tank. The tank is two months old now. My zoa is only a week old. what are your levels as in alk, mag, calcium, salinity, temp nitrate and phosphates?
Secondly looking at the rock, I would say you have used dry rock and it is possibly leaching phosphates and still going through a cycle of some sort and the algae I'm not sure on. Also as your light is that close, and rock work that high, maybe 3 inches or so off the surface, I would say it's getting alot of light so I would turn the blues down to 25 and white to 3 and leave it there for a while. These are powerful lights and zoas dont need loads of light. How long have you had the light at those settings? I'm running mine also 9 inches off the water on an 18" high tank but 40 blue 4 white (previously 35b 3w) I'm growing montipora half way up my rockwork.
This is my tank lastnight. I have a zoa on a frag plug in the bottom left of the pic as far away from the light and its finally opening but it didn't open for nearly a week.
Ok cool I still think 74-76 is on the lower temp side. Corals like zoas and other lps even sps nee nitrates and phosphates. Just a word of warning dont use too much and drop the phosphates to zero. That's what killed 99% of my sps only montipora digitata but it still hurts buying frags growing it so well , that I made enough money to buy a tank for may bedroom. Just that I am now doing nitrates and phosphates and what had survived is how slowly growing again.

Where did you get your tank?
I run mine blues on 8:30 am off at 8 pm whites on at 9:30 am until 7:00 pm. I don’t see why you couldn’t run yours during those times. If that’s when your able to see your tank I would run them then. Yes do blues first then last that allows your coral from getting blasted with full light right away. It allows them to wake up so to speak lol
