So I have a question about starting a five gal pico tank I also have a 30 gal running currently if I were to take five gallons out of my 30 gal on a water change day use some of my love rock from my 30 would I still have to cycle the tank or would it be cycled cause all the beneficial bacteria from my 30

no thats perfect.
You may get some ugly but not the whole deal. (ugly is not the cycle IMO)
It's also how I set up an emergency treatment/hospital tank in 14min.
yea yea, really it depends on my coffee intake.
live sand is live. so its all good. if you find the small bag that perfect imo. some come with a "clarifier" or "Bio Magnet"...its bacteria.
if its dry rinse it. and sniff it first.
my only tip would be consider salinity. ATO. in a small tank temp and salinity.

I tried a fluval 5 once...it got overran with algae within 2 months >.<
I had a 5g standard w diy ran for 2 years +. heat became an issue(summer). aquaclear and hob $13 refugium.
balancing nutrints is a bit tricky. and algae ugg.

Now that you mention algae... how many hermits and snails would you recommend for a 14G? I have 4 hermits, three snails and a banded shrimp... I'm tempted to expand my CUC, but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot.
In my 25 I have about 10 astraea, 4 scarlet hermits (2 in the sump), 3 nassarius
In my 10 I have 3 hermits, 2 astraea, 2 trochus.
The banded really isnt a CUC-its more ornamental.
Youre good on hermits-dont want to overdo those lol make sure you have bigger shells than they have tossed in there too or they will go after snails. For the most part, they are meat eaters, they dont graze much. I tend to overfeed, thats why I have them. ps-scarlets are the *most* reef safe, and some people will never have hermits for a CUC because of the meat eater fact.
If you have a lot of algae, astraea are the way to go. You could do 5-8 of them.
If you have sand I would suggest getting 1 nassarius too. They stir up the sand a good bit but they are meat eaters (extra food)
I like nass. because they look like zombies coming out of the sand at feeding time hahaha
With that said, your CUC really depends on how much algae (and a little bit on what type) you have. if you dont have much, your CUC will die.

Awesome. I will try to only get a nassarius... (you got me a "zombie coming out of the sand!)... maybe I'll get one blue legged hermit crab too.
I just discovered that one of my hermits has purple coraline on his shell! I hope it transfers, extends, moves, sticks (whatever the term is) to my live rock!!!
lol you could always scrape it off onto your rock. think of it as "seeding" your rocks.
The first time they come out to feed, youll totally get the reference hahaha
just be careful of hermits...I dont trust any but the scarlet but Ive never had any of the others either.
