Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to touch base...For those who don't know me, my name is Brandon. I am the owner of Bones Reef which for the past 5 years has focused on breeding clownfish.
My wife and I are relocating down to Huntsville next month from Minneapolis MN for her work, and we are very excited.

I will be opening up a new shop in the area which will be full retail, but will also host my breeding setup for all my clowns.
I will keep everyone posted over the next few months, especially for the launch of our new website(which will be full e-commerce).

I had a chance to visit the local fish shops in the area last week on our house hunting trip. If anyone has suggestions for what you would like to see as a customer please do share. :)

I noticed that there is a BRS group order taking place... I am good friends with the owner up here, and our store will carry their full lineup.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks again!

Brandon

Welcome to Reef2Reef and to Huntsville Brandon. What kind of clowns do you have? I tried your website but it is not responding.

Jack

Jack,
Our website is in the process of a redesign and will be down for at least 1 more month. We currently breed the following clowns:
B&W Ocellaris
Ocellaris
Snowflake Ocellaris
True Perculas
Picasso Perulas

If you have any other questions let me know.

thanks

Bones Reef needs to sponsor R2R... :D

Haha...you have been tryin to get me 2 for quite some time ;)

Send me some info on over again

Wow. Very exciting! There aren't an over-abundance of shops in our area. Hope you find a niche here and do well. Keep us posted.
Mariner

Mariner,
Thanks, I will make sure to bring a higher level of coral and fish to the Northern Alabama area...but without the crazy price tag.

What is the shop that most people go to?
What do you guys not see in your stores that you would like to?

Thanks again

Welcome, Brandon. It will be very nice to have another shop to go to. Will you consider hosting our meeting (NARC) in your shop in the future?

As for local shops here, there is Coral Reef Aquatics in Athens and The Aquarium Shop in Huntsville. I believe that people on this forum go to Coral Reef Aquatics more than The Aquarium Shop although CRA owner says that not many in the area comes to the shop. He says that his clients are mostly from the outside of Huntsville-Madison area.

Brandon - Welcome to the rocket city. What did you do in MN? Did you have a LFS there? We'll be sure to look you up when you get here.

Thanks guys, Of course I will host meetings at the shop. H@rry, up here in minnesota I breed clowns :)...I'm lucky enough to have a wife with a great job which allows me to do what I really love.

Rodney, welcome to the south. We have alot in common. My better half works outside the home and I get to take care of all the fish and coral systems. We have some babies right now ourselves. We have not been very successful with the clowns yet but working on it.We have done pretty well with cardinals. We had our clowns hatch a few days ago, small brude but we are still hoping to raise them.
Jason

Jason,
Congrats on the Cardinal success! :) would love to see some pictures.

So what type of Coral & Fish do you guys wish you had available to you at your local shop? Just from my short visit I did not see a very large selection...(this could have just been bc the stores were in between shipments) but would still care to know what you guys never see that you want.

Thanks again!
Brandon

You must have visited The Aquarium Shop if the selection was small. Coral Reef Aquatics has a pretty good selection. They have been adding some high end SPS frags lately, too.

I had a chance to visit both shops while I was down there. But there are some large shops up here....and we are in a major city, so I should take that into account when viewing the selections that other places offer.

The place I will open will not be large, only 2,000 sq ft.

Well, the size of a city matters. I agree that shops in large cities tend to be much larger and have a lot more things. Aquatic Critters in Nashville is comparable to many shops up north.

However, small shops can pack a lot of nice things, too, especially if demand is there. A few years ago, Philip Root had a great frag shop in the back of Aquarium Designs in Birmingham. His area was smaller than 1000 sq ft, but the selection and the way he managed it was good enough to impress Anthony Calfo very much. Unfortunately, Philip moved on to bigger and better things now - a new 20,000 sq ft coral farm down in Keys.

I also visited many shops in Osaka, Japan. Many of the shops are small (certainly less than 2,000 sq.ft.), but they are fabulous in both fresh and salt water selections, (livestock and hardware.) Needless to say, aquarium hobby is much more popular over there.

I hope your shop will be a great one. I know people travel a good distance to visit a good shop. I understand that CRA gets a number of people coming from Mississippi and Tennessee regularly.

I hope you will also consider participating in the regional frag swaps in the future. We have a few around us. The one in Nashville in January is probably the biggest one around here. Chattanooga swap in August is another good one - you might run into a stiff competition with Sustainable Aquatics there for crownfish, though.

We try to keep quite a decenct selection down here were we are.We are only appox. 900sq.ft last time I measured but we are working very hard to keep it full.

Tomoko, are you talking about jason..or myself? Bc I was removed from reefcentral a couple years back while in college for reasons unknown to me....

Brandon - I'm not sure I would feel comfortable dealing with someone who has been removed from RC. If they can't trust you why should I? :hammer:

FWIW - They kicked me off over a year ago. They also kicked my wife off just for sharing an IP address with me. You just can't trust troublemakers.

Bealzebub, where are you??
