Water bill went up $200!???

How much water are you making a month? Your water must be very expensive I do not think I have ever had a $200 total water bill. I would be looking for a water leak.

This... make sure every water using device in your house is turned off, and go check your meter. Hopefully it's not spinning.

Also check with water on, so you can see what the meter looks like when water is being used.

Quick search show the most expensive water of about $0.02 per gallon. That would mean that the extra $200 in the bill would be 10,000 gallons of water and 2,000 gallons of RODI water.

ours goes up 150 dollars every spring, to top off 20000 gallon pool after winter, so something really has to be off with your system, meter, or both

Did your city recently install meters that allow them to read the usage remotely? Our city did that and all of sudden people would get bills for 4 to 6 times their norm. City refused to look into it, just told them they were watering their yard too much.

Are you shutting it off at the valve/faucet or a shut off valve at the unit? If at the unit then it isn't being shut off completely and you'll continue to get waste water.

You're forgetting cooking, cleaning, laundry, toilet, showers, garden etc.

Look at your previous water bills. Possibly the previous months were estimated and they caught up with you with the high bill?

Quick story:

I was washing my car one day, neighbour came over, asks if he can ask a question about our water and hydro bills, I said sure, no problem. He asks what I pay, I tell him maybe $60 (at the time) for water which is every four months, and maybe $120-140 for electricity which was every two months. He was kind of speechless and looking kind of white, I asked "Why, what's up?". He said since they moved in (like a year) they have been paying combined about $6-700 for both and it wasn't until his brother found out that he didn't realize it wasn't normal. I was like whaaaa?

SO it turns out his electric water heater had a broken valve which was draining hot water into the drain, constantly. It was like a $25 part. Ouch.

Did your cost for water jump, you may want to check that. cost of water and electricity change from time to time.
Our water bill is going to triple here coming up and it will cost me around 350 dollars more every 3 months with the same water usage. It is a insane jump.

The question is your cost of water high? It may not have anything to do with your ro unit. You need to measure your output for clean and waste and see what the ratio is.
You dont want to spend money on a booster pump if you do not need too.. It could be water is expensive in your area like mine.

If your water cost are high 100.00 may not be bad of a jump. Water cost are different everywhere.
Seems like a lot but for me but when my price of water goes up 3x a 100 dollar jump may be spot on to fill a aquarium or do water changes for a month.

Check your toilets! A leaky toilet valve will increase your water bill by a MUCH larger amount than a RODI system. Sometimes you won't hear a 'flush' but your toilet will be in a constant state of flushing.

Figured that was included in the water bill prior to it going up.

I would think the same thing.

Our water bills are calculated on 1000 gal increments, which costs around $6.50 per 1000 gallons. My RO usage for my 75 gallon tank is minimal. My bill runs around $120/month but over half of that is non water related charges. Now I know of people around me that live in communities that use a for profit water company and their bills are around $300 to $500 a month.

I am pretty sure most municipals charge sewage based on water usage, so it could be like $100 in water and $100 in sewer.

I am guessing something like a flush valve not turned perpendicular to the pipe, hence its dumping 99% of the water down the drain while making RO. Or broken auto shut off valve, or some hoses backwards, like perhaps water restricter on the ro instead of the waste line?

That type of the jump doesn’t make sense. Any chance you missed a payment and your bill is catching up?

As you can see there's a lot of input, but the bottom line consensus is that nobody believe your RODI unit is entirely responsible for the jump. The reason being is you need many more thousands of gallons that you'd reasonably produce in a months time.
