Hey guys, I have a 57g Deep Blue tank and i currently own an almost brand new mp40wqd... but just out of curiousity.. which powerhead do you prefer for this tank? Or is it all just personal preference?

I own and use mp40's for the simple reason that I can just grab the wet side out of the tank, soak it in vinager and scrub it with a toothbrush once every six months. Plus I don't trust having cords in a tank full of water with my hands in there.

Do you have the newer model mp40’s? I purchased mine a few months back brand new and just put it into a new build last night and even at like 20% it seems to be a lil loud? Maybe I’m not used to them I dunno

I have the older models. It's best to hook them up and turn them full blast and then move the wet side around until you can get it as quiet as possible. Then turn the speed down to what you need.

Mine are a little loud but my tank is in a seperate game room. The new models are suppose to be alot more quiet.

I control mine using my apex with a wxm module.

Personal preference I think. What bothers you more, a clunky motor on the outside of the tank or one inside the tank? I much prefer the vortechs myself. One trick I've learned over time is to align the two sides by feel. Once the wetside is running, put your hand on the dryside and adjust the former until the motor runs smoothly.

Don't forget to use the cable tie mounts also. First time I started mine up the dry side fell off into the floor and the wet side fell into my rocks and broke the propeller guard. Be careful cleaning them also so you don't break the propeller guard because it is very fragile.

Well my plan was to have one or two pumps on the backside of the tank so I guess visually it won’t be an issue for the mp40

Yeah I haven’t mounted them yet bc I have it in a temporary spot until I set up my aqua scape to the way I like. Maybe that’s another reason it’s a lil loud

I’m still wondering if I’ll be okay with just 1 mp40 on this tank.. it has a center overflow and I was going to put a powerhead on both sides of the overflow.. think that would be too much for this tank even if they were dialed down?

I would love to put mine on the back wall of my 750xxl but everyone I've seen on here try it put them back on the ends of the tanks because they didn't like the flow it created. Maybe someone running them on the back wall can chime in.

Between my buddy and I we bought 5 WAV's. We had 5 WAV failures in less than 2 years. They are all 5 in a landfill somewhere now.

My mp40 dry side seems to be running a little warm... is that normal?
Yes that's normal. Another advantage of the mp40. The heat generated by the motor remains out of the tank and out of the water.
I've used both vortechs and WAV and both a good pumps with plenty of power. I prefer vortechs for all the reasons listed above, especially no cables in the tank.
I would recommend a second powerhead not so much for more flow but for more randomized flow. One powerhead will ramp up and down intensity but only push water in one direction. The second powerhead can sync with the first and work together to create a vaiety of effects that are beneficial to your reef.

I use a very similar profile, except I don't turn it down at night. The ocean doesn't sleep, so why should my tank hehe :)

Yeah I just used a coral labs template. I keep saying I'm going to change it up but just haven't got to it yet. In the middle of a 750xxl setup right now. Took off work Friday so I would have all weekend to finish it. :)

Honestly I have found extreme value in using both!
